March 12, 2008: Anyone who is a total beginner to any photoshop program needs a Scott Kelby book 'I'm using CS2 and Elements 5 at the moment'. He is straight forward and user friendly with his directions. He never makes the assumption that you know where and what the different features are on the program. Truely a step-by-step guide for even the least computer savvy user. Totally worth the money, even more than other books on the same subject. I'm going to buy his DVD next.

December 26, 2005: I've been reading things written about Photoshop by Scott Kelby since version 5.5 and I've yet to be disappointed. As the title indicates, this book targets digital photographers, though evil film photographers will benefit from this book as well. The book begins with a hilarious forward where Kelby interviews himself. He gets down to business by teaching several tips, tricks and techniques on getting your photos from your camera and into Adobe Bridge. He covers everything one could possibly want from Bridge in these first 2 chapters. The book then continues with discussing Camera Raw, resizing and cropping (that?s right, 24 pages on these closely related topics) and a chapter each on color management and color correction. I tried one of his color correcting techniques that uses curves. After creating an action with it, I now use it on every photo that I open in Photoshop. It?s one of those things that I didn?t know I needed but I?ve yet to use it on a photo and NOT have the color improve noticeably. Kelby covers conversion to black and white, common digital photo problems, cloning / healing, and 46 pages on retouching portraits. There is an in depth chapter on special effects followed by lessons in creating ?panos?. The next 28 pages is invaluable for sharpening photos. He gives exact values for different sharpening techniques and sharpening different subjects. Kelby is very good about providing exact numbers to use for SEVERAL different techniques, not just sharpening. The last two chapters have to do with showing your work to clients. If you?re not a professional photographer these chapters are NOT wasted. There is very useful information on everything regarding printing: Picture packages, digital frames and embedding digital copyrights on your photos. He even explains how and why you should download different ICC profiles from the different paper manufacturers. Since I did this, I?ve gotten nothing but compliments on my work.
