It happened at the ball . . .
Where beautiful but bold Lillian Bowman quickly learned that her independent American ways weren't entirely "the thing." And the most disapproving of all was insufferable, snobbish, and impossible Marcus, Lord Westcliff, London's most eligible aristocrat.
It happened in the garden . . .
When Marcus shockingly—and dangerouslyswept her into his arms. Lillian was overcome with a consuming passion for a man she didn't even like. Time stood still; it was as if no one else existed . . . thank goodness they weren't caught very nearly in the act!
It happened one autumn . . .
Marcus was a man in charge of his own emotions, a bedrock of stability. But with Lillian, every touch was exquisite torture, every kiss an enticement for more. Yet how could he consider taking a woman so blatantly unsuitable . . . as his bride?
Though this historical romance kicks off on a corny note with the heroine, who has a supersensitive sense of smell, buying a seemingly magical perfume the story quickly evolves into the kind of engrossing, dynamic romance that readers have come to expect from Kleypas. The setup is familiar: strong-willed American heiress Lillian Bowman gets under the skin of straitlaced earl Marcus Westcliff, and soon finds herself sharing the sheets with him. But what distinguishes this book from a multitude of similar stories are Kleypas's characters. One can imagine the mouthy Lillian as a regular on Sex and the City and, with his contemporary sensibilities and hunky good looks, Marcus could easily win the heart of a modern woman. Indeed, while the protagonists are both hardheaded in a typical way and their path toward love is peppered with few surprises, it's no chore to sit back and be amused by their antics and engrossed in their struggles. Even if this romance isn't as fresh as the first book in Kleypas's Wallflowers series, Secrets of a Summer Night, the charismatic characters including Lillian's pert sister and chatty, mischievous friends ensure that it's never boring. January 15, 2010: If you are looking for a steamy, funny, and in-depth romance novel, then this is the one for you! It does lag a little at the beginning, but soon picks up, and does not slow down. The dialogue was funny, especially Lillian's colorful language. This is a perfect book for rainy days because you will not be able to put it down, or get much done. Truly enjoyed it. Since I am reading the series, I cannot say this is my favorite of the four, but so far I prefer it to the first one - Secrets of a Summer Night.
I Also Recommend: Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflower Series #1).

December 27, 2009: Having read Mine till Midnight, I was taken aback by ms.Kleypas' storytelling skills. I found that book a little OUT there with the gypsy plot and everything, but still enjoyable. While reading that book, I came across minor characters Lord and Lady Westcliff. I thought nothing of them, but as i searched for another Kleypas book, and saw It happened one Autumn, I had to read it. It was so romantic and teasing at the same time. there's a lot of action and conflict that make this book an auto-page turner. A younger Lord westcliff is absolutely captivating as he tries to stay on the straight and narrow. and Lillian is by far my favorite character. Shes adventurous and walks off the beaten path so to say. I am just so in love with this book its crazy. Its apart of the Wallflower series, and I plan to devour the other books within a few days, but this started off my obsession with the wallflower series and is a MUST READ!!!! (mine till midnight is the 1st in the hathaway series and deals with the gypsy plot that i didnt find to allureing, but you shhould give that series a read too)
I Also Recommend: Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflower Series #1), The Devil in Winter (Wallflower Series #3), Scandal in Spring (Wallflower Series #4), Mine Till Midnight (Hathaway Series #1).
