    Synopsis

Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of Mr. Hosokawa, a powerful Japanese businessman. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening -- until a band of gun-wielding terrorists breaks in through the air-conditioning vents and takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different countries and continents become compatriots.

Without the demands of the world to shape their days, life on the inside becomes more beautiful than anything they had ever known before. At once riveting and impassioned, the narrative becomes a moving exploration of how people communicate when music is the only common language. Friendship, compassion, and the chance for great love lead the characters to forget the real danger that has been set in motion and cannot be stopped.

Bel Canto has all the qualities one has come to expect from a classic Ann Patchett novel: grace, beauty, elegance, and magic.

    Biography

After selling her first story to the Paris Review while still in college, Ann Patchett was steadily publishing her poignant, award-winning novels by her early 20s. In fact, her first novel sold 24 hours after it had been sent out. From the fantastical Bel Canto to the heartrending memoir Truth and Beauty, Patchett's precocious beginnings have blossomed into a major literary career.

January 23, 2010: In a strict sense, Bel Canto, the title of Ann Patchett's novel, would refer to an operatic singing style relished for its beauty and lyricism, epitomized in the exquisite vocal control of the heroine, Roxanne Coss. The qualities listed in the Wikipedia definition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bel_canto) for this offspring of Italian operatic tradition just as easily apply to this novel's voice. All the characters and facets are deftly legato, a light tone permeates the dialogic registers, Patchett's narrative voice is agile and flexible with no excessive vibrato, the tone has a pleasing timbre, diction is limpid, and her authorial phrasing and breath control is mirrors that of Ms. Coss.

Yet, this is not just a classic opera tale, with a facile dramatic plot. Rather, it bounces off the 1996 Lima Crisis, a hostage situation linking Japan, South American insurgents, and a cast of 126 hostages. Patchett, however, creates an analog tale populated by an ineffective, expendible national vice-president, a Japanese industrialist, the diva, 'terrorists' who soon show themselves to be anything but terror-inspiring, and the translator-hero, he who through his linguistic and translational prowess and professionalism, keeps various worlds alive and communicating. The official SWiss negotiator ends up being as superfluous and ineffectual as the vice-president, albeit both come to recognize important self-actualizing aspects of their lives.

Besides being a love story with opera at its heart, Bel Canto intertwines the force of music with that of words, into several love stories, at times comic but in the end, all fated to die. This is a tragedy that mangages, nonetheless, to exceed itself, in a sad but life- and love-affirming marriage, thus ending as a tragicomedy of sorts.

What I enjoyed most about this beautifully written novel, besides the grace and elegance of its voice, was the deep understanding of what it means to be multilingual and multicultural and how important that is today in a global society. As an American surrounded by too much monolingual, monocultural hubris, this tale is exemplary without being preachy: it's not nearly enough to try to buy yourself a translator or a second language in minutes a day. It takes long but satisfying hours that should be music to your ears.

Immediately after reading this, I bought this as a gift for a friend who loves opera. I'm waiting to see how he enjoys it.

January 23, 2010: This was the first Ann Patchett book that I have ever read and I read it in one sitting because I was totally mesmorized by all the characters, the story line and where it took place. Upon finishing the book, I almost forgot where I was because it felt like I was coming out of a dream. Ms. Patchett leaves you with a lot of room for thought about your own life and decisions you would make if placed in this situation. She really pulls you into the story right from the first page. Enjoy.
