Except for a visit from Bonnie and Clyde in the 1930s, Madrid is just about the sleepiest place in Oklahoma until a drive-by shooting, the return of a pair of bad-boy brothers, and a crazed killer bent on revenge combine to give the town a jarring wake-up call. While the superb depiction of the small-town environment, unexpected details (e.g., a pet pot-bellied pig), and well-done dual romances add charm to this sexy, occasionally humorous story, a few too many characters complicate an already nicely intricate plot and diminish the intensity of what could have been an incredibly suspenseful story. Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable book, and London's fans should be pleased.
