    Synopsis

Introducing the stunning third volume of Philip Pullman's critically acclaimed fantasy trilogy, His Dark Materials. The Amber Spyglass brings the intrigue of The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife to a heartstopping conclusion, marking the final volume as the most powerful of the trilogy.

Along with the return of Lyra, Will, Mrs. Coulter, Lord Asriel, Dr. Mary Malone, and Iorek Brynison the armored bear comes a host of new characters: the Mulefa, mysterious wheeled creatures with the power to see Dust; Chevalier Tialys and Lady Salmakia, hand-high spy-masters to Lord Asriel; and Metatron, a fierce and mighty angel. So, too, come startling revelations: the painful price Lyra must pay to walk though the land of the dead, the haunting power of Dr. Malone's amber spyglass, and the names of who will live -- and who will die -- for love. And all the while, war rages with the Kingdom of Heaven, a brutal battle that -- in its shocking outcome -- will uncover the secret of Dust.

In The Amber Spyglass, Philip Pullman deftly weaves the cliffhangers and mysteries of The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife into an earth-shattering conclusion -- and confirms his fantasy trilogy as an undoubted and enduring classic.

    Annotation

Winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year award, 2001

    Publishers Weekly

"In concluding the spellbinding Dark Materials trilogy, Pullman produces what may well be the most controversial children's book of recent years," wrote PW. As he asks readers to examine the ideas of organized religion, "Pullman riffs on the elemental chords of classical myth and fairytale. Stirring and highly provocative." Ages 12-up. Philip Pullman

    Alfred A. Knopf

    Fantasy

"As war rages and Dust drains from the sky, the fate of the living- and the dead- finally comes to depend on two children and the simple truth of one simple story." Philip Pullman's story The Amber Spyglass tells the epic adventures of two ordinary children named Will and Lyra. In this book, they come upon two little people called Gallvisepians, together they venture to the world of the dead where they will fulfill many destinies. Meanwhile, in another world, a scientist named Mary Malone finds a way to make an amber spyglass. But little does she know that at the same time an assassin is hunting her down. Not only that but in yet another world Lyra's father; lord Asriel is gathering troops of outcast angels to fight the authority. What will happen next? Find out in The Amber Spyglass.

The Amber Spyglass is an exciting story that you won't want to put down. Lyra, one of the dynamic protagonists, is a ferocious, sly girl with brown-blond hair, and blue eyes. During the beginning of the book, Lyra's mother, Mrs. Coulter, puts Lyra into a drugged sleep trying to keep her safe from her father and the Consisteral Court of Discipline. Mrs. Coulter is a practical, beautiful, woman who persuades people into getting what she wants, but she is loving towards Lyra because she never knew her as a young child. One of Lyra's best friends is a boy named Will Parry who has a special knife that can cut through to other worlds. Will is a fierce boy with deep blue eyes, and a jutting jaw, but yet he is caring towards his mother who he had to leave to find his father. These characters all play a vital part in the plot of the story.

The Amber Spyglass is a thrilling, action filled adventure that will keep you hooked, and make you not want to put it down. With this astonishing conclusion to the trilogy His Dark Materials, you'll be disappointed that it's over. The moment I started reading, I felt like I was one of the characters in this story. If you enjoy a compelling fantasy book with science fiction mixed into it, then The Amber Spyglass is the perfect book for you.

August 23, 2009: I read all three books of the series and loved them. I was intrigued by the religious themes, I had to re-read several passages to make sure I understood them in the context of the religion. The descriptions were amazing - so vivid and clear that I felt I was "in" the book rather than just reading it. I think you can read these books on two levels - the first is just pure enjoyment of the story and mental visualization. The second is reading to understand what the author was saying about religion and how people accept things without question sometimes. These are books that you think about for a long time after you read them.

This book, the third in the series, was written with an urgency that made it a compelling read - I found myself rushing through the last few chapters because I was anxious to read about the final outcome.

Well written book - beautiful language
