Textbook (Hardcover - New Edition)
Textbook Information
Including everything from basic theories to the latest breakthroughs in screening, treatments, diagnosis, and interventions, Neurological Rehabilitation, 5th Edition, is the classic neurology book for therapy students and clinicians alike. The book takes a problem-solving approach to the therapeutic management of movement limitations, quality of life, and more. With an emphasis on real-world problem solving, case studies in every chapter show the application of concepts presented. The text also details best practices put forth by the APTA and other leading physical therapy organizations.
Reviewer:David J Fischer, DPT (Slippery Rock University)
Description:This book emphasizes a client-centered full systems approach to neurological physical therapy. It focuses on problem-solving strategies and evidence-based literature to guide examinations, evaluations, prognoses, and intervention strategies in patients with neurological dysfunction. The previous edition was published in 2001.
Purpose:Using current clinical studies and scientific research, this book is designed to provide clinicians and students with a comprehensive discussion of all aspects of neurological rehabilitation through various problem-solving strategies to guide neurological examinations, evaluations, and interventions, enabling individualized and highly effective care. Due to the recent shift in therapeutic care from specific treatment approaches to evidence-based interventions and the tremendous increase of new information in neuroscience and intervention strategies, this book provides a significant contribution to the physical therapy community.
Audience:Darcy Umphred is one of the most respected clinicians in the field of neurological rehabilitation. With 29 years of practice and training in evaluation and treatment of disabilities and impairments in individuals with neurological problems and research interests in motor learning, the author brings a wealth of information for physical therapy students and even for experienced clinicians. Students and clinicians with high proportion of patients with neurological problems would benefit most from this book.
Features:This comprehensive book covers foundational neurological theories, normaland abnormal neurological development across the life span, documentation, discussion and analysis of therapeutic management of the most common neurological disabilities encountered by therapists, and relevance of other system problems. Special features in all sections include examinations, evaluations, prognoses, and intervention strategies using a problem-solving approach. Numerous patient examples and case studies in each chapter help readers with the problem-solving process and apply the concepts. Well covered areas include the limbic system and neurological adaptation as it pertains to clinical decision-making. With vast references and research-based interventions, the book provides readers the necessary information for successful problem-solving strategies in the clinical arena.
Assessment:The recent advances in knowledge and clinical research in neuroscience have enabled clinicians to refine and adapt their interventions to the current needs of patient care. By incorporating evidence-based information and furthering knowledge of medical diagnosis and science as it relates to neurological problems, and by using a unique systems-focus on movement diagnosis, this is a comprehensive resource that will help clinicians with sound clinical reasoning in neurological patient care. However, with the information spanning over 1,200 pages, this book is not organized and indexed well enough to allow quick reference in a clinical situation. Though it does review certain basics of neuroanatomy, readers would benefit most from this book if they came to it with a thorough knowledge of this area. Huge advances in neuroscience and intervention strategies justify the need for this new edition. All of the chapters have been revised and four new chapters have been added (on movement development across the life span, health and wellness, documentation, and cardiopulmonary interactions) to provide the most current information and research.
