Like the New York Times said, yes the lobotomy was horrible but it seems what effected his life the most was the way he was treated as a child. And although Lou was a horrific step mother you can't let his dad off the hook for one minute, to me he was just as bad.

I don't think there was anything in the book that people growing up in the 50's/60's wouldn't already have some ideas about by just...

I didn't really realize what I was getting into when I picked up this book. The first time I saw it on the bookself I was intriged about what this story might be about. But I felt like it was a book I needed to read. I'm so glad that I did go back and purchase the book. I had no idea how compelling this story was. I learned a lot from this book. It taught me about mental institutions and mental health practices in the sixties and seventies. It was moving and thoroughly engrossing. I recommend this book for anyone who has to deal with mental illness. I would also recommend it for all parents especially those with stepchildren.

This investigative memoir follows Dully as he seeks out the reason for his lobotomy at age 12 in 1960. In a general sense the book was certainly entertaining. The content pulled the reader close to Dully and allowed one to experience his progression through life as he did. The reader has the insight of recent findings and can observe the events from a larger perspective while still maintaining a sense...

Synopsis

In this gut-wrenching memoir, Howard Dully recounts what life was like after he was needlessly lobotomized by an unlicensed physician at the age of twelve at the behest of his abusive stepmother.

The New York Times - William Grimes

Mr. Dully eventually finds a woman who loves him, a love he returns to her, her son and the son they have together. Therein lies the answer to the biggest question of Mr. Dully's life. The lobotomy, although terrible, was not the greatest injury done to him. His greatest misfortune, as his own testimony makes clear, was being raised by parents who could not give him love. The lobotomy, he writes, made him feel like a Frankenstein monster. But that's not quite right. By the age of 12 he already felt that way. It's this that makes My Lobotomy one of the saddest stories you'll ever read.
