A palletable book for the mathematically inclined...by Anonymous

February 25, 2005: I used this book as an undergraduate when I studied physical chemistry; while the book provides fairly detailed descriptions of physical principles associated with physical chemistry, it is seriously lacking in the derivation department. Most derivations in the book skip a large number of steps (most likely for brevity's sake); while some derivations are fairly intuitive and 'easy to work thru' the majority require some thought and the abscence of what I considered some essential steps made many hard to follow and in some cases downright incomprehensible. I do not reccomend this book to a biology or chemistry student not well versed in the mathematical arena; unfortunately I don't currently know of an alternative book in this area... for biophysical chemistry, use the three volume set of Cantor and Schimmel as it is the 'bible' of biophysical chemistry; or for an excellent physical organic textbook look to Gould's 'Mechanism and Structure in Organic Chemistry' (ca. 1960).

January 01, 2004: I used both this book and the McQuarrie text. McQuarrie is excellent for derivations and fundamentals but Atkins text is more accessible to the average student. Most people give this book a bad review because their intellect was not sufficient to grasp the concepts explained therein. The answers in the back are occasionally wrong.
