If you were born after 1964, you never saw, in person at least, Yogi Berra swing a bat. You never heard him call a baseball game or fight with an umpire. Here's your chance to catch up. Yogi presents Yogi Berra as he has never been seen before. This is the first major biography of one of the greatest catchers in the history of the game-and the greatest living New York Yankee.
Public libraries probably have books by or about Yogi, but DeVito (Wellington: The Maras, the Giants, and the City of New York) aims to be definitive with his long and admiring look at Lawrence Peter (Lorenzo Pietro) Berra's life, detailing the man behind the malapropisms. A more thorough treatment than most star players receive, it's likely to appeal more to seasoned buffs than to fans of Yogi's AFLAC commercial. For all large baseball collections.

November 02, 2008: I only knew Yogi as the cuddly master of the malaprop who had played some ball years ago. What I learned is that he's one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of sports - and a pretty shrwed businessman, too. A well written and ubiased bio that's must read for any baseball fan and recommended for anyone who wants to read the story of a guy who came from nothing to become an American legend.

June 16, 2008: While this book reads a little easily, and in fact seems very trite and cursory at the very end, almost completely glossing over Yogi's post-1999 involvement with the Yankees and life in general, this is a very well-done biography which does much to weed out truth from apocrypha in Yogi's life and give a more complete picture of the man I still regard as the greatest catcher ever to play the game. A perfect read for the beach or vacation...or even while waiting for Joe Girardi's 2008 crew to realize its potential.
