The New York Times bestselling story of a friendship frozen between life and death
Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in fragile bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the thinnest. But then Cassie suffers the ultimate loss-her life-and Lia is left behind, haunted by her friend's memory and racked with guilt for not being able to help save her. In her most powerfully moving novel since Speak, award-winning author Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia's struggle, her painful path to recovery, and her desperate attempts to hold on to the most important thing of all-hope.
Anderson, the author of Speak and other award-winning novels for teenagers, has written a fearless, riveting account of a young woman in the grip of a deadly illness.

November 10, 2009: This book brought a lot of controversy. It was banned from several schools by concerned parents/educators but now that I've read it for myself, I see how it could be helpful for girls like Lia and Cassie, rather than harmful. (Not that I thought it was harmful to begin with) WINTERGIRLS allows the reader to explore dark thoughts and fears from a safe corner in her own bedroom. You feel what Lia feels and you understand why she does what she does. I even looked at my pizza differently last night, but I still ate three slices. For girls (or boys) who are in similar situation as Lia, this book might just be the sort of awakening they desire to find the help they need. Or, it could just be a source of great entertainment, like it was for me.
It's beautiful, inside and out. The hardcover is gorgeous (and I do recommend you get it in hardcover, it's one of those). The metaphors that Anderson uses are so vivid and strong, you can't help but read passages like the above over and over. I highly recommend this book to any and everyone; young, old, male, female. Doesn't matter. It's one of those that shouldn't be missed.Reader Rating:

October 26, 2009: this is an amazing book and really opens the eyes to those who don't understand eating disorders. it helps for people to understand. however, i also see it as a trigger for those who are at risk for eating disorders. i loved this book to the extremes, but after i read it, slowly i've started to develop and eating disorder. so, before you read it, make sure you're mentally prepared enough for it. because if you're someone like me, it could be triggering and you don't want that.
but it is one of the best books i've read in quite the while. amazing.
