      Synopsis

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful—too beautiful for words.

Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings.

In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

      Publishers Weekly

Pike's debut novel-a faerie story with a touch of Arthurian legend-offers a botanical twist on the genre. Laurel Sewell, the new girl in town, discovers a strange "zit" on her back, which blooms into a flower. With the help of her friend and growing love interest, David, with whom she entrusts this information, Laurel finds out that she is a faerie, and that faeries are really highly evolved plants (Pike gives readers hints: Laurel prefers to have lunch outside and eats little besides vegetables and Sprite). Tamani, her sexy faerie guardian, completes the love triangle, as he protects Laurel from encroaching dark forces and fills in the blanks about her past. As Laurel and David never muster much chemistry, her rocky journey of self-discovery is the main draw ("It makes me want to go home and go to sleep and wake up to find that all of this is a dream. That the flower, the bump, even public school never happened"). Pike's novel mythology should win fans for this book, billed as the first in a series. Ages 12-up. (May)

November 24, 2009: Wings is an enchanting novel about a young girl, Laurel, whose life is changed forever in an instant. Laurel is suddenly informed that she is not of the human species, but is instead a faerie. This information takes Laurel on unexpected adventures that she, and her friend David, could never have imagined in any of their wildest dreams. But when Laurel and David come face to face with a group of trolls, it puts their courage to the test. The overall theme of this book is to realize, and accept, who you really are. Don't ever pretend to be someone, or something, you're not. I really liked the overall story this book tells and The exciting adventures and plots that are included. It keeps you turning pages, wanting to find out what happens next. Also, I like that it isn't too difficult and is just an enjoyable read. I disliked that the relationships in the book between characters never really grow and change substantially. I was expecting a little more growth and change between characters. Besides that, there really isn't much that I didn't like. If you like reading for fun, and you want a good fast, not very hard read, then this is the book for you! Also, if you are a fan of the Twilight series, then you would enjoy this fairy tale story. On a scale from one to ten, i would rate this book a ten. It was really fun and exciting for me to read. It is a good story that keeps me wanting to find out what happens next!
