Synopsis

Transform digital chaos into a well-organized home network

When was the last time you backed up your home computer? If your household is a hodge-podge of unconnected laptops, desktops, and printers, it's time to bring order and peace of mind by creating your own secure home network with Windows Home Server (WHS) and this comprehensive guide. From protecting your data against hardware failures to organizing all of your family's digital media onto one central hub, this practical reference covers all the techniques and step-by-step instruction you need to succeed.

• Choose the out-of-the-box WHS solution or repurpose a spare PC

• Go wired or wireless, run Ethernet cable, and configure a router

• Walk through installation and get up to speed on the WHS Console

• Establish user accounts, set up shared folders, and create a print server

• Schedule backups for PCs or Macs and recover from crashes

• Build a media hub and stream to computers, Xboxes, and PlayStations

• Monitor your home remotely with a webcam

Biography

Greg Kettell is a software engineer with over 20 years experience in managing servers and programming enterprise applications, single- and multi-player games, and internet applications. He’s written and contributed to books on HTML, Dreamweaver, ColdFusion, Microsoft Office, Access, and various graphics packages. Greg is a home theater enthusiast and amateur astronomer who misses the Arizona night sky since moving to upstate New York.

Jennifer Ackerman Kettell is a web designer and the author of several books on software applications, graphics, and web design. Some of her titles include Microsoft Office 2003: The Complete Reference and The Absolute Beginners Guide to FrontPage 2003. Jenn is also a fiction author and avid (some say obsessive) researcher. Greg and Jenn live with their two children, two dogs, and two cats in a house that sometimes seems to be made more of fur than wood and tile. The kids want to add to the menagerie, but shouldn’t hold their breath.
