Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Sirimon Reutrakul, MD (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description:This comprehensive textbook of general endocrinology updates the 2003 edition.
Purpose:The purpose is to serve as a condensed and authoritative discussion of the management of clinical endocrinopathies, based upon the information obtained from chemical, physiological, genetic, and epidemiologic investigation as well as the wealth of clinical trial data. With the science of this field growing rapidly, this book helps guide endocrinologists in the care of their patients, which meets the authors' objectives.
Audience:This is a comprehensive resource for practicing endocrinologists. In addition, the depth of information, written by authors who are lead clinicians and researchers in the area, makes it a useful reference for clinical and basic researchers. Fellows in training will find useful fundamental information that will help them better understand some very basic but important concepts in endocrinology. This is a good reference for internists as well.
Features:The book covers all area of endocrinology, starting with fundamental principles in hormones and hormone action, as well as laboratory techniques for recognition of endocrine disorders. This informative topic is not generally covered in other medical textbooks. This book describes all endocrinopathies such as thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive disorders, with a great deal of information about pathophysiology that is still a subject of ongoing intense research, as well as clinical management. The chapter on diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus, is superbly written by leadresearchers in both basic and clinical science covering all areas. A newly added chapter covers neuroendocrine control of appetite and body weight, an area which has received intense interest from clinicians and researchers in the last few years. All illustrations are in color and easy to understand.
Assessment:Since the 2003 edition was published, there have been many discoveries and newly developed areas of interest in endocrinology, which are updated in this edition. The exceptional quality of this book makes it an essential reference in the field.
