Synopsis

This classic text is now in its 50th year! Completely revised and updated for the ninth edition, Willard and Spackman's Occupational Therapy continues to set the standards for the field. This major revision has been completely reorganized and refocused down to the very last page, with no chapter left untouched. The reader will appreciate the text's close examination of the professional development process and the unprecedented coverage of evaluation and treatment. New chapters cover evaluation performance contexts, treatment of performance contexts, and the psychometric properties of assessment instruments. New first person narratives by people with disabilities help readers understand the patients' perspectives and apply them to their own career experiences.

Annotation

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some two-color illustrations.

Rand Christman

With over 47 contributors, this is a valuable and in-depth reference book that highlights the history, development, theory, and practice of the diverse and changing field of occupational therapy. An overview of what occupational therapy is and how it is applied in the United States is provided. It is also meant to be used as a reference book. Written primarily for occupational therapy students, it is also useful for healthcare students in general, as well as beginning occupational therapy practitioners. The photographic illustrations are, in some examples, only marginally acceptable. It is difficult, especially with high information books, to include an adequate amount of inviting images that specifically relate to the topic. This deficit is offset by the affordable cost of the book, which is an important consideration for students. When used as a quick reference, the index takes some getting used to, but the book is rich in topics and details. This is a very useful and invaluable reference for the serious occupational therapy student who seeks an overview of occupational therapy, how it has evolved, and what its future holds. Case histories are well presented, explaining the clinical experience of both the therapist and the client. Clinical reasoning and the multidimensional aspects of the ever changing human system are present and well documented. Chapters highlight the importance of occupational therapist's need to see the clients as individuals, with ties to cultural, socioeconomic, and family systems. The impact of environment is emphasized as an important aspect of function, dysfunction, and rehabilitation. Chapters showing remediation in clinical compensation givevaluable insight and inspiration to the beginning occupational therapy student. Research results and their impact on future assumptions of validity are presented. This book conceptually defines occupational therapy in a well thought out format of ideas.
