More Reviews and RecommendationsWilson Rawls grew up on a small farm in the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma. There were no schools where he lived so his mother taught Rawls and his sisters how to read and write. He says that reading the book The Call of the Wild changed his life and gave him the notion that he would like to grow up to write a book like it. He shared his dream with his father, and his father gave him the encouraging advice, "Son, a man can do anything he sets out to do, if he doesn't give up." Rawls never forgot his father's words, and went on to create two novels about his boyhood that have become modern classics.

November 11, 2009: I had to read this book in 5th grade as a read-aloud book. I really enjoyed it! It has a great story and awesome characters. Some of my friends have read it, (Even ones that don't like animal books!) and also enjoyed it. One thing I must point out, however - on the front cover of this version, the dogs can't be Redbone Coonhounds - all Redbones are red, but these dogs look like a Golden Retriever and a Weimaraner.

October 15, 2009: Where the Red Fern Grows
This book is about a boy, two dogs, and the love between them. A boy, who was known with the name of Billy, lived in the Ozark Mountains. He lived with his mother who was pregnant, father, and his two sisters. Billy wanted a redbone coon hound or also known as a hunting dog. Billy went for a walk down to the river bank. The fishermen were always leaving things down at the river bank, hooks, bait, fishing line; and Billy also saw a knife that was stabbed into a tree. Billy saw a magazine add that was advertizing people selling two redbone coon hounds. Billy had prayed and prayed for this moment and finally, he had it. There was a problem, Billy had a poor family and didn't have enough money. Billy prayed that if there was some way that he could earn some money so that he could buy those two dogs, he would do anything. Billy's grandfather owned a shop in town and Billy worked for his grandfather for a few months. Billy earned enough money to get the dogs. Billy payed his granfather with the money that he made for the dogs. His grandfather ordered the dog. All Billy had to do was to go and get the dogs. Billy caught a ride with a delivery boy to a small town, and then he had to walk the rest of the way. Billy got there; he picked up the dogs, and was on his way. Back home he made his dogs a pen and collars. He named them Old Dan and Little Anne. They grew up fast and Billy taught them how to hunt. One day they went hunting and in the shadows there were eyes but they weren't coon eyes..
