    Synopsis

    JESS MASTRIANI

was misunderstood by her teachers and had a crush on the local bad boy, but that didn't mean she was trouble. But trouble found her when she survived a lightning strike and discovered that a newfound talent had been bestowed upon her.

Now, whenever she sees a picture of a missing child, Jess knows exactly where he or she is when she wakes up the next morning. Reuniting lost children with their desperate parents is one thing, but Jess must choose whether to use her power for good...or for evil.

    Children's Literature

Meg Cabot, writing as Jenny Carroll in this reissue of the first "1-800-WHERE-R-YOU" series has perfectly captured the attitude and language of her high school characters as she spins a fast-moving and enjoyable read. Jessica Mastriani is a regular in the counselor's office and detention hall because of her penchant for solving problems with her fists. It is always for what she considers to be the best of reasons, usually defending her schizophrenic brother or her brilliant, funny, and fashion-challenged best friend, Ruth. Unfortunately Ruth decides they should get in shape by walking home on the day a storm hits and the girls are forced to seek shelter under the bleachers. Jessica is struck by lightning and nothing will ever be the same. She wakes up the next morning knowing exactly where to find the two missing children pictured on the milk carton and her mysterious new skill attracts the attention of the FBI, who whisk her away to a remote and supposedly inactive military base. To compound problems, one of the missing children, who did not want to be found, is now running from an abusive father and Jess feels compelled to help him. She manages to get a message to a very cute and slightly dangerous guy she met in detention, and he helps her escape the FBI and reunite the little boy with his mother. Readers will want to get to know these somewhat quirky and resourceful characters better, and one can only hope they do not decide to emulate some of their law-breaking tactics.

June 06, 2009: I absolutely LOVED this book. First of all, I love any of Meg Cabot's books, so this one was not a disappointment. I have to give Meg Cabot props; she's such a wonderful author! This book was great! Jess is just an average teen trying to survive high school, so she's pretty easy to relate to. I really loved the whole storyline of the book. I wished I would have thought of it ;)! I don't know how many times I can say it - this book was GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT. I was so into it I finished it in one day. It was really good. I would recommend it without second thoughts. A gazillion stars all the way!!!

January 12, 2009: I thought the novel "When Lightning Strikes" by Jenny Carroll(Meg Cabot), was a good story. It was about an average teen that every teenager can relate to, Jessica Mastriani. She has a crush on a cute boy named Rob, she plays the flute, and she is always stuck in detention. But all of this will soon change once she finds a new talent, after being struck by lightning! "When Lightning Strikes" is a great story, with an action packed plot, and many twists and turns.
The fiction story takes off in Jessicas high school. Jessica(the protagonist), yet again gets in trouble, and is sent to detention. After she walks home with her best friend Ruth who basically forced Jessica to walk home with her. Ruth is very much so, a static character. While walking home there is a lightning storm. Jessica and Ruth seek shelter under the schools bleachers, on the football field. I hope you can guess what happens next. Jessica is leaning on the side of the bleachers, and the lightning strikes through the bleachers, hitting Jessica. This is a tragic flaw because it causes a lot of problems for Jessica down the road. Jessica will soon find out how this accident will forever affect her life.
The next morning Jessica wakes up, but she somehow knows where two missing children are located. At first she doesnt want to tell anyone, which causes an internal conflict. Jessica finally tells her older brother Douglas about everything. Douglas is like another father to Jessica. Whenever Jessica has any sort of problem, she will go to Douglas for help. Douglas persuades Jessica to tell the rest of the family about Jessicas accident. The next day after detention Jessica gets offered a ride home from a boy named Rob, who she has always been crushing on. Throughout the story Rob helps out Jessica a lot, and changes a lot. So Rob is like a round character. Jessica wants to check out the missing child Sean O'Hanahan from her dream, who was in the next town over. So when they got in front of his house, ran up and questioned him, he denied being Sean. Why did he deny being Sean? Was he hiding something? Jessica had to do something so she called 1-800-Where-R-You, and reported Sean. The next day was very bad for Jessica, causing another conflict in her life.
The next morning Jessica knew where two more missing children were located. She reported the missing children on a pay phone at her high school. After reporting them, two FBI agents had a meeting with Jessica and her counseler. They found out about Jessicas powers and wanted her to do lab tests and find more missing people for the government. They wanted Jessica to do all of this at Crane Military Base, at the next town over. Jessica had time to think about doing this or not, and didnt want to make her decision yet. When Jessica got home she found out the newspapers found out about her powers. They wanted all of the details about her. They wouldnt stop intruding on her life and family. So to make the press leave her house she went to Crane. The agents will soon be Jessicas enemy. This will cause the start of the rising action.
Jenny Carroll did a great job of writing this novel. I couldnt put the book down because there was so much action and suspense. I loved how the plot was put together also. Jenny Carroll also did a great job of characterization. She had a balance of characters whether it was protagonist to antagonist, and so on. I also liked the theme of this story; dont run away from y
