    Synopsis

WESLANDIA honors the misfits—and the creators—among us.

School is over and Wesley needs a summer project. Having learned that every civilization has a staple food crop, he decides to plant a garden and start his own—civilization, that is. He turns over a plot of earth in his yard, and plants begin to grow. Soon they tower above him and bear a curious-looking fruit. As Wesley experiments, he discovers that the plant will provide food, clothing, shelter, and even recreation. It isn't long before neighbors and classmates have developed more than an idle curiostiry about Wesley and exactly how he is spending his summer vacation. Enter the witty, intriguing world of WESLANDIA.

    Annotation

Wesley's garden produces a crop of huge, strange plants which provide him with clothing, shelter, food, and drink, thus helping him create his own civilization and changing his life.

Riverbank Review - Nathalie op de Beeck

All kinds of readers, from second graders to scholars of colonial dominion, will relish this tall tale, narrated in the matter-of-fact voice of the earnest anthropoligist. With abundant wit and lush visuals, Fleischman and Hawkes offer a triumphant revenge-of-the-nerd story that has nothing to do with computers.

    Biography

Paul Fleischman, like Wesley, constructed his own alternate world during his school years. "My friends and I invented our own sports, ran an underground newsppaer, and created our own school culture," he says.

Kevin Hawkes says that Wesley's world reminded him of ROBINSON CRUSOE, one of his favorite books as a child. "Wesley lives in this place where everything is the same," he explains, "yet he has created something unique and is living self-sufficiently, on his own island, in a way."

April 30, 2008: Weslandia is about a young, creative, outcast named Wesley who needs a summer project. Not interested in the same things ?normal? kids are, he comes up with a plan that will blow you away, and catch the interest of the neighborhood kids who torment him! This book by Paul Fleischman follows Wesley through an adventure unlike any other. Wesley is an independent and resourceful kid who is wiser than his years. I found myself not believing what he was coming up with next! I would love to use this book as a read aloud followed by an activity where we use resources found in the classroom or outside of our school for our shelter, clothing, recreation, and food. After reading this to my students I hope they will be inspired by Wesley and be creative in their choices. The illustrations are vibrant and full of action. A book that is not only exciting to read, but it has a good message about being true to yourself no matter what!
