    Synopsis

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

The New York Times - Elizabeth Judd

Circuses showcase human beings at their silliest and most sublime, and many unlikely literary figures have been drawn to their glitzy pageantry, soaring pretensions and metaphorical potential (Marianne Moore leaps to mind). Unsurprisingly, writers seem liberated by imagining a spectacle where no comparison ever seems inflated, no development impossible. For better and for worse, Gruen has fallen under the spell. With a showman's expert timing, she saves a terrific revelation for the final pages, transforming a glimpse of Americana into an enchanting escapist fairy tale.

October 24, 2009: Water for Elephants is an unpredictable read with surprises in store for you! There is love, drama, romance, hate, fear, and jealousy, among other emotions, that are depicted by the characters. This book, told from the perspective of the main character Jacob Jankowski, reveals a small portion of his life working on the circus. However, the reader not only gets insight into his past, but they also get a glimpse into his life at the present, where he is an ornery and somewhat forgetful old man of 90, or is it 93? Even he can't remember! In the story, Jacob gets a job working on the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth as a veterinarian. Life on the circus in the 1930's proves to be shocking and difficult. It appears Sara Gruen did her research to accurately and vividly portray circus life during that time period and its many joys and pitfalls.

Overall, I thought Water for Elephants was an ok read. Not my favorite book, but definitely not the worst. I felt that the first half of the book was somewhat slow, and there wasn't enough of a hook to get me personally invested in reading the rest of the book. Because I read the book with my book club though, I felt compelled to read it entirely. By the end, I was pleasantly surprised! The last half of the story was filled with unexpected twists and developments, with a solid closure. I would recommend Water for Elephants to anyone who is looking for a thrilling, adventuresome read!

October 22, 2009: Water for Elephants has a little bit of everything. It has romance, anger, drama, a down to earth feeling, and remembrance of the old days.

The story is told through the eyes of an elderly gentleman who is reflecting on his twenties. The reflection is triggered by the circus coming to town. The circus is something he has strong memories to support.

Personally, I felt the book took a while to get exciting. The last 50 pages I could not stop reading, but up until that point the words moved at a very slow pace. On the other hand, it was a very eye opening experience for what happened in the circus when it first started.

Every understanding will be questioned, every prediction proven wrong, and every page will bring new excitement.
