The first page in this elaborate book is a letter from Coralis, the "Master Wandmaker," written for the "apprentice" in the form of a journal and guide. Attached to the page is an envelope labeled "Vow of Secrecy," that contains an oath of secrecy that the apprentice must sign before proceeding. This begins the involved descriptions and explanations designed to appear mysterious and intriguing. Brown and beige tones on each page show drawings, old maps, and writings designed to look antique and authentic. The journal begins with the seven rules of wandmaking, and the care and keeping of a wand. Small notes and envelopes with cards and letters attached to the pages add to the sense of secrecy. "Harnessing the Power of Nature" is illustrated using plastic overlaps of constellations. Actual facts are interspersed, particularly in the pages about crystals and animals. There's humor throughout, and several pages describe "Infamous Failures." A red satin ribbon is attached as a bookmark, and the back section has an actual wand, glass crystals, feathers, and colored sand enclosed in plastic. This book should interest the readers of fantasy, but the printing is small and the vocabulary is advanced.
