    Synopsis

The focus of Ruhlman's powerful narrative is the Cleveland Clinic's world-renowned, idiosyncratic Dr. Roger Mee - a virtuoso within a select surgical specialty and a mine of information on medical statistics, ethics, and politics. Walk on Water is a riveting glimpse into the heart and mind of a man in whose hands a baby's life rests almost every day.

Walk on Water describes the entire team, from surgeons to operating room technicians and nurses to intensive care physicians, as well as the babies and their families, who rely blindly on these strangers to save their sick children. Surgery on congenital heart defects is arguably the most difficult surgical specialty to do well; in no other specialty are craft and speed so important, nor is the surgeon so directly and vividly responsible for a child's life or death. This type of surgery, practiced on innocent children with white-knuckled families relying on all-too-human doctors, makes for what one surgeon describes as "soul-crushing, diamond-making stress."

    The Denver Post

While I had no direct practical reason to read Walk on Water, I could not stop. Ruhlman takes a depressing subject and, while keeping hard-nosed journalistic principles, somehow makes it uplifting. — Steve Weinberg
