    The Barnes & Noble Review

Even if the very idea of books about dragons makes you want to flap your wings and fly away, Naomi Novik's Temeraire series might change your mind. "Patrick O'Brian with dragons," wrote one admiring reviewer when Novik hatched the series as a paperback original with His Majesty's Dragon. And now the story of a young British naval officer who becomes the head of his country's formidable dragon air force in the war against Napoleon (who has some nasty dragons of his own) continues at full strength. Temeraire, bred by a Chinese wizard as a gift to Napoleon and captured (still inside his egg) by the ship on which Will Laurence is sailing, instantly bonds with Laurence -- who reluctantly gives up the sea for the sky. The pair have many adventures together. Now, on the heels of their mission to Africa (told about in Empire of Ivory ) and seeking the cure for a deadly contagion, the dragon has been removed from military service, and Laurence has been condemned to death for treason. Meanwhile Napoleon's forces have breached the Channel and successfully invaded English soil. Their prime objective is the occupation of London. The newest, and best, ingredient Novik has added to Victory of Eagles is turning Temeraire from a military to a political animal -- a winged Stephen Maturin to Laurence's Jack Aubrey. Banished to the Welsh breeding grounds called Pen Y Fan, "after the hard, jagged slash of the mountain at their heart," the dragon learns to negotiate with other dragons who solve their disputes with politics rather than displays of strength. It's a wonderful conceit, supremely executed. Patrick O'Brian would have loved it. --Dick Adler

    Synopsis

Naomi Novik’s triumphant debut, His Majesty’s Dragon, introduced a dynamic new pair of heroes to the annals of fantasy fiction: the noble fighting dragon Temeraire and his master and commander, Capt. Will Laurence, who serves Britain’s peerless Aerial Corps in the thick of the raging Napoleonic Wars. Now, in the latest novel of this dazzling series, they soar to new heights of breathtaking action and brilliant imagination.

It is a grim time for the dragon Temeraire. On the heels of his mission to Africa, seeking the cure for a deadly contagion, he has been removed from military service–and his captain, Will Laurence, has been condemned to death for treason.

For Britain, conditions are grimmer still: Napoleon’s resurgent forces have breached the Channel and successfully invaded English soil. Napoleon’s prime objective: the occupation of London.

Separated by their own government and threatened at every turn by Napoleon’s forces, Laurence and Temeraire must struggle to find each other amid the turmoil of war and to aid the resistance against the invasion before Napoleon’s foothold on England’s shores can become a stranglehold.

If only they can be reunited, master and dragon might rally Britain’s scattered forces and take the fight to the enemy as never before–for king and country, and for their own liberty. But can the French aggressors be well and truly routed, or will a treacherous alliance deliver Britain into the hands of her would-be conquerors?

    Publishers Weekly

Naomi Novik continues her alternate history of the Napoleonic wars in this fifth adventure featuring British Capt. William Laurence and his faithful celestial dragon, Temeraire. Picking up after Empire of Ivory, a disgraced Laurence has been convicted of treason, sentenced to a prison ship and is only one step away from the hangman's noose. Temeraire is relegated to a breeding area in Wales along with other dragons viewed as past their prime. When Bonaparte invades England, Laurence and Temeraire are soon free to fly and fight for king and country. Vance fully inhabits Novik's vividly realized fantasy world. His battle scenes are exciting as he describes all the intricate fighting tactics without sacrificing the thrills. With keen vocal characterizations, he portrays a wide variety of individuals, both human and nonhuman, with the dialogue between Temeraire and some snobbish, older dragons singularly entertaining. A Del Rey hardcover (Reviews, May 19). (July)

    A satisfying readby NancyLibrarian

August 29, 2009: Poor Will Lawrence and Temeraire are considered treasonous for sharing the cure for the dragon plague with the French, during the Napoleonic Wars. They are thinking of the dragons, not of nations and war, and so are caught between conflicting duties. But Temeraire is desperately needed by Wellington, and with the usual flurry of crises, the dragon and Lawrence end up fighting in battles and ferrying important news despite their disgrace. Napoleon invades England, and what follows seems inspired by the French in WWII--some collaborate, some resist. But there is always hope for England, though we have to wait for the next book to find out how Napoleon gets chased back to France.

I Also Recommend: His Majesty's Dragon, Throne of Jade, Black Powder War, Empire of Ivory.
