      Synopsis

Part project book and part history lesson, this unmatched collection of lace patterns offers techniques for embellishment and edging to shawls and scarves. The 40 projects are deciphered, rewritten, charted, and adapted for modern tools and fibers, and are presented with full-color photos and illustrations of both the works-in-progress and the finished items. Comprehensive information on the tools and techniques of lace knitting helps beginning knitters, and challenging patterns keep experienced and ambitious knitters engaged. Delicate and decorative, the historical lace patterns in this book are adventurous and dynamic.

March 06, 2007: It's official..knitting is one of the hottest new crafts today, and some of the most beautiful projects in this gloriously photographed tome are over 100 years old. Author Jane Sowerby, whose careful research through England's libraries, has recreated over 30 surprisingly modern looking lace shawls, scarves and fichus, which can be reproduced by both the novice as well as the expert knitter. Full of informative facts about Victorian instruction books and knitting, Jane provides complete instructions to reproduce these beautiful works of art for your own wardrobe. An excellent source book for any knitter. One tiny note regarding the Myrtle Leaf Shawl (page 142), please note one correction to the charted pattern A, line 13, which should be 'Slip Stitch 1, K3, k1, *YO, k4, K2tog, k3, YO, K2tog*, repeat between ** to last 4 stitches and then K4' rather than 'K2tog', which is noted at the start of the pattern in the stitch chart. This will ensure that the upper leaf is closed properly.
