      Synopsis

Continuously in print for more than 20 years, Abrams' Masters of Art series has always been known for its exceptional quality and value. Now these classic volumes devoted to the lives and works of the world's greatest painters have been newly redesigned and released in paperback for the first time. Comprehensive introductory texts written by distinguished art historians provide incisive and informative portraits of the artists, and their analysis is accompanied by sketches, related works by other artists, and black-and-white photographs. Each book features 40 full-page, full-color plates with commentaries on the facing page.

Jan Vermeer's mysterious and poetic paintings-with their luminous power and their simple, studied, everyday scenes-continue to fascinate us. This volume reproduces all of Vermeer's known works, including Saint Praxedis, which had only recently been validated by scholars as an important early work of the artist at the time of the book's original publication.

      Annotation

      100 illustrations, 40 in full color, 128 pages, 8-7/8 x 12"

A Fine Introduction to a Master's Workby Calicrates

February 14, 2009: Author Arthur Wheelock is something of an authority on Vermeer with a half-dozen or so books on his subject. Many are of the scholarly, academic sort. In this well-illustrated and affordable volume, Wheelock provides a useful introduction to Vermeer and the context in which he worked. There is a good overview of painting in Delft at that time, and of Vermeer's contemporaries who influenced him.

Best of all, however, are some 40 or so full color, full-page illustrations featuring all known paintings confirmed to be by Vermeer. Enlarged images of some of these, focus on details and Vermeer's brush strokes and enable some understanding of his technique.

For the artist or student looking to see large, full-color, well-produced images of the paintings, this is an excellent starting point.

I Also Recommend: Howard Hodgkin, Anselm Kiefer.
