    Synopsis

This is a new edition of the successful textbook providing updated, detailed information on clinical, epidemiologic, pathophysiologic and therapeutic aspects of common and rare forms of vasculitis. New chapters include pathology of vasculitis, autoantibodies, animal models of vasculitis and PET scanning. Separate sections are devoted to basic science, clinical manifestations commonly seen in vasculitis, imaging and perpcutaneous interventions, individual diseases and syndromes as well as conditions which can mimic vasculitis. Subsumed under clinical manifestations are chapters, some new, which deal with skin, oral ulcers, eyes, cardiopulmonary system, nervous system, the gastrointestinal track, kidney and digital ischemia and Raynaud's phenomenon. Other chapters address diagnostic approaches to adults and to children with suspected vasculitis, as well as assessment of disease activity and damage. Individual chapters are written by authorities from throughout the world.

Reviewer:Celia J Fang, MD (Washington University Medical Center)
Description:This comprehensive book addresses vasculitis using various classification schemes: clinical manifestations, features, vessel size, mimickers. Chapters describe animal models of vasculitis and specific imaging and percutaneous interventions. This is an update of the first edition published in 2002.
Purpose:The authors wanted to update the previous edition with "major recent advances in the science of immunology as they apply to diagnostic and pathogenetic aspects of vasculitic syndromes and their treatment." They accomplish with chapters written by authors with the greatest expertise. An authoritative book on vasculitis is much needed for such a complicated disease.
Audience:It is primarily written for rheumatologists, although nephrologists, dermatologists, radiologists, and neurologists may also benefit.
Features:The book takes a unique approach by not just addressing each disease process in itself, but also broadly from a systems viewpoint. What is best about this book is how comprehensive it is. Few vasculitis textbooks are available and to find all one is looking for in one place is beyond helpful. I would have preferred placing the color pictures throughout instead of in a separate section.
Assessment:This is a comprehensive and invaluable tool that I can recommend, especially since not many books of this sort are available. Since many advances have been made in immunology and in understanding the pathogenesis of vasculitis, this second edition is justified.
