    Annotation

The book contains both black-and-white and color illustrations.

    Francis H. Straus II

This is new multiauthored uropathology text contains 14 chapters covering diseases of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra, testes, penis, and adrenal glands. There is strong emphasis on urologic neoplasms covering pathology, differential diagnoses, staging, and prognosis. The purpose is to provide surgical pathologists with evolving diagnostic criteria and differential diagnostic considerations in the common everyday practice of dealing with surgical pathology specimens from the urinary and male reproductive systems. Full presentation of this material could occupy several volumes, and this single volume format indicates some restraint, but features of immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular biology are included. The authors have created a text for surgical pathologists to help them arrive at correct diagnoses and to provide accessory information that their reports should include to give clinicians the necessary information to care for their patients in the most scientific manner. Besides pathologists, clinicians such as urologists, reproductive medicine specialists, and primary care physicians will find the material covered in this book useful in understanding their patients' problems. This book is extensively illustrated with more than 1,000 photographs in black-and-white and color. There are some drawings and many colored boxes highlighting tables, lists, or differential diagnoses. The text is subdivided with section headings in several sizes and colorations. Chapter endings include extensive literature references (685 after prostatic neoplasms) and some are as recent as 1995. There is a moderately extensive 17-page index at the end for findingspecific disease entities. This is the most complete urologic pathology text currently available and it is written by recognized experts in this field. The publisher has succeeded in producing a workable solid text with good illustrations and clear subheadings in the chapters. The authors are a little too inclined to use abbreviations in the text, legends, and tables that slow down the reader; however, this will be an important book, either in the workplace or in the library.
