November 07, 2007: Up a road slowly by Irene hunt is a historical fiction novel. This book was okay. It kept me reading, not necessarily because it was suspenseful, but because I wanted to finish it. Up a road slowly took place in Virginia in the early 1900s. Julie the main character of this novel was sedated and brought to her Aunt Cordelia?s. She did not know the reason for this and it troubled her. Julie has to learn to like her Aunt Cordelia as a teacher, an aunt and a mother figure. Her mother had passed away but she never really finds out why she can?t live with her father. Almost every weekend when she lives in this new house she visits her dad and her sister until her sister moves away. She visits her sister one day and her sister is pregnant. This troubles Julie because she used to be her sister?s favorite but now when her sister is going to have a child of her own, Julie will not be the favorite anymore. Julie also visits her uncle Haskell almost every day. When Julie has the choice to live with her dad again when she is older, she chooses to stay with her Aunt Cordelia. Irene Hunt made this book more interesting than I imagined it would be. I imagined it would be boring because I knew a little about the book before I read it and it did not seem like an interesting topic to read about. She added very many words that were hard to grasp the meaning of but these words gave me the incentive to read. She chose a great character to tell the story. She chose Julie. Any middle schooler would like this book. They will learn that life is difficult for some.
