March 12, 2007: This book explains and affirms many of the thoughts, emotions, and actions that one is likely to encounter in a very unsettling time of one's life. By putting many of the actions, thoughts and emotions into words at a time when your mind is racing, questioning everything you have known for a long time, it provides comfort and support.

February 14, 2001: I read this book years ago when, after more than 20 years of marriage, I began to realize that *pretending* I was in a perfect marriage was no way to live. I was amazed by this book. Ms. Vaughan has expertly selected the stories of many couples whose relationships were in various stages of coming apart. She has an uncanny knack for weaving these stories into a deft understanding of the human condition. This is not a how-to book. It does not purport to tell you how you should feel or act. But you will see your partner in its pages, and most importantly, you will see yourself. Some troubled relationships break apart, some heal, stronger for surviving the fires of discontent and disappointment. I don't know which will be your course, but I do know that in this book you will find that you and your partner are exquisitely human, that others have felt as you are feeling, and that only by being happy yourself can you make your partner happy. You will see too that no one wishes to hurt a person once loved. You are not mean-spirited for wishing to be happy, you are simply, perhaps emphatically, human.
