The definitive text in sonographic scanning covering abdominal, vascular obstetrics, gynecology, thyroid, other small parts, and more has been completely updated and revised in this excellent 2nd Edition! This text offers a comprehensive compilation of step-by-step sonography protocols using AIUM guidelines specifying organ location, anatomy, physiology, sonographic appearance, normal variants, patient prep and position, transducer choices and survey method, as well as required images and image labeling. The 2nd Edition features protocols for full and limited studies and new chapters on pediatric and adult echocardiography.
The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.
This second edition ""how-to"" book of ultrasound scanning techniques is a step-by-step instruction guide on scanning various parts of the body. The first edition was published in 1993. The editor's purpose is to provide instruction and proper image documentation for the sonography student. This step-by-step instructional guide is an invaluable tool, as scanning technique is the technologist's ""bread and butter."" This is an excellent guide for the student of ultrasound, or the seasoned technologist who wants to improve his/her skills. According to the editor, sonography educators can use this text as a study guide. I would agree and add to that list lead sonographers who are striving for quality control in their departments and physicians who are learning ultrasound. All contributors to this book are RDMS certified. The layout of this book is wonderful. Each chapter has detailed anatomy drawings, scanning protocols, monographic appearance of the anatomical part discussed, and good monographic images with detailed side by side drawings. The side by side anatomy detail and matching ultrasound image is an excellent teaching tool. Each section includes ""required images."" This is an excellent feature as it shows the sonographer how a complete exam appears. Echocardiography and neonatal brain scanning add to the completeness of this text. There could have been more color images utilized throughout the vascular section. This is an excellent ultrasound book for the student, the teacher, or the sonographer who wants to sharpen his/her skills. The completeness of this text is amazing. The protocols can be an invaluable tool for a departmental quality control program. Theultrasound images are very clear and the side by side schematics are extremely helpful. Beginning each section with a detailed anatomy drawing, moving on to proper scanning technique, and finishing with required images for a complete ultrasound exam make this text and outstanding ultrasound tool.

September 12, 2009: There was much hype about the new edition. In fact, our class went weeks without a text book waiting for it to be released. As I read the book, I found many inconsistencies and I began writing them down for clarification from my instructor. These "inconsistencies" turned out to be errors...some publication and some writer error. By the time we were finished I had 7 type-written pages of mistakes (my instructor sent them to the editor). I was disappointed that as a first year student I was able to find critical errors that editors should have caught. And to add injury to insult, the quality of the book was so poor that the binding broke and I have pages falling out. The book is literally split in two. You may not have a choice when purchasing this book (if required), but don't be afraid to question what you read...you may be correct.
