Synopsis

About three things I was absolutely positive:
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him–and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be–that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife -- between desire and danger.

Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

Publishers Weekly

In our Best Books citation, PW called this tale of a teen attracted to a vampire, a "riveting first novel, equal parts suspense and romance." Ages 12-up. (Sept.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

July 04, 2009: I read this book as an assignment for a young adult literature class. I can honestly say that it would have appealed to me when I was in my teens. At my present age, however, it reminded me of what I disliked about my teenage years.

I am very disappointed that Meyer did not make Bella a stronger character. I do not like Bella as a role model for young women. Bella was far too caught up in Edward and willing to lose herself just to be with him. I think this perpetuates the stereotype among young women that they are worthless unless they have a man in their lives.

As a future school librarian, I will not discourage anyone from reading this book. However, I will suggest other excellent books along similiar genres, like Robin McKinley's books, which contain stronger female characters.

I Also Recommend: Beauty, The Hero and the Crown, Deerskin, The Blue Sword, Sunshine.
