Synopsis

Twilight in the Desert reveals a Saudi oil and production industry that could soon approach a serious, irreversible decline. In this exhaustively researched book, veteran oil industry analyst Matthew Simmons draws on his three-plus decades of insider experience and more than 200 independently produced reports about Saudi petroleum resources and production operations. He uncovers a story about Saudi Arabia’s troubled oil industry, not to mention its political and societal instability, which differs sharply from the globally accepted Saudi version. It’s a story that is provocative and disturbing, based on undeniable facts, but until now never told in its entirety. Twilight in the Desert answers all readers’ questions about Saudi oil and production industries with keen examination instead of unsubstantiated posturing, and takes its place as one of the most important books of this still-young century.

July 14, 2008: Originally copyrighted in 2005 and recently updated, Matthew R. Simmons has written a timely, clear, and urgently informative book. Focused primarily on the Saudi oil situation, this book is equally relevent to the whole global oil market crisis we are facing right now. Seriously compelling, fact-based arguments. This is not a hyped-up, current trend book. I actually found the book's conclusions very encouraging, such that I now welcome higher oil prices!

March 22, 2006: Author and leading oil expert Matthew R. Simmons departs from other books of the oil doom-and-gloom genre, which usually review peak production formulas, extend them to global oil reserves and posit an inevitable decline. Global oil production, they all warn, must begin to diminish 'sooner or later.' While indisputably true, such homilies overlook the core question: when? When will the decline actually begin - now or 50 years from now? (As John Maynard Keynes put it darkly, 'In the long run, we?re all dead.') Taking quite a different tact, Simmons ignores the bit players and focuses on Saudi Arabia, the world?s petroleum giant. He links historical data with solid information and graphs on oil reserves and production, and adds his informed perspective on how the oil business really works. No wonder the house of Saud reportedly spent an entire year priming its public relations network to defuse this book?s thesis. By sticking to facts and avoiding prognostication, Simmons makes a cogent case that it?s time for the world to start working on 'Plan B,' that is, what to do once Saudi production declines. We recommend this book to all business readers. As the lifeblood of the global economy, oil is everyone?s business.
