Biography

Carter V. Findley, president of the World History Association and professor of history at Ohio State University, received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1969. With John Rothney, he co-founded Ohio State's program in world history and co-authored the book, Twentieth-Century World. In 2000 he received the Distinguished Research Award from Ohio State University. A specialist in Turkish studies with a lengthy bibliography, Findley has also written two major books on Ottoman history, both published by Princeton University Press: Bureaucratic Reform in the Ottoman Empire: The Sublime Porte, 1789-1922 (1980) and the prize-winning Ottoman Civil Officialdom: A Social History (1989). He has been a visiting professor at both the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris, 1994) and Bilkent University (Ankara, 1997) and a visiting member at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1981-1982).

John Alexander Murray Rothney is professor of History at Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1964. With Carter Findley, he co-founded Ohio State's world history program and co-authored the book, Twentieth-Century World. His areas of specialization include the history of modern France and twentieth-century world history. His books include Bonapartism after Sedan (Cornell University Press, 1969) and The Brittany Affair and The Crisis of the Ancient Regime (Oxford, 1969). He has also published a number of articles in scholarly journals. His latest project is a work entitled "France Since DeGaulle: An Interpretative History."
