July 26, 2005: As I was finishing school for Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration it became apparent that I wanted to enter the apartment/condo maintenance industry so I began looking for a book that covered the troubleshooting of a vast majority of appliances. I stumbled upon this book at my local library and haven't put it down for a week now. This book does NOT cover natural gas appliances, only electric. However, this didn't bother me as the majority of appliances used in apartments and condos in my area are electric. First, this book has a chapter devoted to getting you familiar with electricity, various types of test equipment used, reading schematics and ladder diagrams, ohms law, and of course safety. I already have a degree in Electrical Engineering but the average person with no prior electrical experience should find this chapter informative and easy to follow. Next, this book covers the principles of operation, step by step troubleshooting, repair procedures, and diagnostic charts for almost all major appliances such as Dishwashers, Garbage disposers, Electric water heaters, Washers, Dryers, Electric ranges and stoves, Refrigerators and freezers, and Ice makers. The book is not 'brand specific'. In other words, it does not cover Maytag or GE appliances. It merely gives the reader the basics of operation and troubleshooting of all major electric appliances. Overall, I found this book a great first read into the world of electric appliances. I'm going to purchase this book to keep on my bench in the shop for reference. For the average do-it-yourselfer, you?ll find this book informative and easy to follow. It's well written and the illustrations are easy to follow. Pick it up if you get a chance!
