The most popular pirate story ever written in English, featuring one of literature’s most beloved “bad guys,” Treasure Island has been happily devoured by several generations of boys—and girls—and grownups. Its unforgettable characters include: young Jim Hawkins, who finds himself owner of a map to Treasure Island, where the fabled pirate booty isburied; honest Captain Smollett, heroic Dr. Livesey, and the good-hearted but obtuse Squire Trelawney, who help Jim on his quest for the treasure; the frightening Blind Pew, double-dealing Israel Hands, and seemingly mad Ben Gunn, buccaneers of varying shades of menace; and, of course, garrulous, affable, ambiguous Long John Silver, who is one moment a friendly, laughing, one-legged sea-cook . . .and the next a dangerous pirate leader!

The unexpected and complex relationship that develops between Silver and Jim helps transform what seems at first to be a simple, rip-roaring adventure story into a deeply moving study of a boy’s growth into manhood, as he learns hard lessons about friendship, loyalty, courage and honor—and the uncertain meaning of good and evil.

Angus Fletcher is Distinguished Professor Emeritus, City University of New York, and is the author of Allegory: The Theory of a Symbolic Mode, Colors of the Mind, and A New Theory for American Poetry, among other books.

    Biography

The Victorian poet and novelist Robert Louis Stevenson once said, "Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant." The author of the magical A Child's Garden of Verses and the chilling The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Stevenson indeed planted powerful literary seeds -- that grew into undisputed classics.

October 18, 2009: Treasure Island is a gripping tale that makes you turn the pages late into the night. The story begins when an old pirate Billy Bones comes and visits the inn of the Hawkin's family, the Admiral Benbow where the father is deathly ill and the mother and son are running the inn. After being presented with a black spot Billy Bones dies. Later on pirates come and try to find a map for treasure that Billy was supposed to have, however earlier in the novel Jim Hawkins the protagonist of the novel and his mother, unlock the chest of Billy Bones and find a map among other thing. After narrowly escaping the pirates Jim turns the map over to two trusted men Dr. Livesey and Trelawney. Once they decide that the map is worth following they buy a ship and set sail for the island after obtaining a crew.

The crew is immediately not trusted by Captain Smollett who is always wary of them. Later into the voyage Jim overhears John Silver the antagonist and several others of the crew planning a mutiny so they can gain access to the treasure. Jim reports his findings to the captain and all the trusted men. When land is reached the Jim and the unfaithful portion of the crew go ashore and make plane their mutiny. After locating the treasure Jim goes back and finds the situation much worse. With the pirates closing in every second can the faithful crew of Smollett's grab the treasure? More importantly can they survive?

September 22, 2009: Here it be me hearties, the quintessential tale of pirates and buccaneers! The tale begins as young Jim Hawkins befriends a dying pirate at his parents' inn, a pirate with the secret of a fantastic buried treasure. From that point on, he is pursued by cutthroats, embarks on a voyage to sea, and befriends the affable sea cook "Long" John Silver. As the book progresses, the excitement builds, and plucky young Jim must become a hero to survive, save his friends, and make off with the treasure.

I cannot overstate how much this book has shaped the public imagination when it come to blood thirsty survey wolves of the sea. Its all here; mutiny, parrots, "15 men on a dead man's chest," marooned survivors, pieces of eight, buried treasure, X marks the spot, and whole kegs of rum.

The Genesis of this story came when Stevenson and his step-son drew up a treasure map on a rainy day and dreamed up a tale of adventure on the high seas. And what better story to appeal to the child in all of us than Treasure Island? Add in unforgettable characters, a palpable atmosphere of excitement, and nonstop action for the ultimate adventure story. So drink up me hearties and raise the topsail! Read Treasure Island and set sail for fun and adventure! Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum!
