No man can resist Jemma's sensuous allure . . . Except her own husband!
Wedding bells celebrating the arranged marriage between the lovely Duchess of Beaumont and her staid, imperturbable duke had scarcely fallen silent when a shocking discovery sent Jemma running from the ducal mansion. For the next nine years she cavorted abroad, creating one delicious scandal after another (if one is to believe the rumors).
Elijah, Duke of Beaumont, did believe those rumors.
But the handsome duke needs an heir, so he summons his seductive wife home. Jemma laughs at Elijah's cool eyes and icy heart—but to her secret shock, she doesn't share his feelings. In fact, she wants the impossible: her husband's heart at her feet.
But what manner of seduction will make a man fall desperately in love . . . with his own wife?
For the first four books in James's "Desperate Duchesses" series, Jemma and Elijah, the Duke and Duchess of Beaumont, uneasily sharing a home after living apart for years, have been key players in the romances of others. In this, the penultimate book in the series, the time has come for them to produce an heir and, if Jemma has her way, rediscover passion and fall in love once more. Jemma is not a chess master for nothing, and this fun-living duchess is determined to win the heart (and heal it, if she can) of her proper, straitlaced duke by making him choose her in the most critical game of her life. VERDICT Clever plotting, luscious sensuality, and witty, intelligent banter are the hallmarks of this scandalously entertaining book, which nicely sets the stage for A Duke of Her Own(coming in August), the story of the wickedly charismatic Duke of Villiers. James (When the Duke Returns) lives in the New York City area.
More Reviews and RecommendationsAuthor of eleven award-winning romances, Eloisa James is a professor of English literature who lives with her family in New Jersey. All her books must have been written in her sleep, because her days are taken up by caring for two children with advanced degrees in whining, a demanding guinea pig, a smelly frog, and a tumbledown house. Letters from readers provide a great escape!

November 30, 2009: I had to read 4 books before this one to get to Jemma's story. And this is my fav. I love Jemma. I do believe that she is my favorite romantic heroine, out of all the books that I've read. Elijah is a very good opposite for her. And I loved how their story continued from the first book to their book. You got to learn a lot more about these two characters than you would from just reading this one book. All the struggles and the evasiveness really pays off. Well written and if you have read the 4 before this one you must read this book!
I Also Recommend: Duchess by Night, When the Duke Returns, A Duke of Her Own, A Duke of Her Own, Mine Till Midnight (Hathaway Series #1).
