Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier.
On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.
Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers.

February 02, 2010: This is an emotional journey about the story, and justification, of a girl's suicide. The events and people that surround her are as real as the teens I see at school every day. Being an English teacher I was especially moved by the role of the English teacher as reason #13. This is a fantastic book for teens, boys and girls, to read and discuss. Not only will this book challenge your perspectives on teen angst but it will make you think before you speak. The things you say are so weighted that they can have eternal consequences- something you learn over and over again in Thirteen Reasons Why.

January 31, 2010: I personally thought this book was amazing. Especially for teenagers maybe 15 years old at the youngest seeing as there is some parts that would be inappropriate for some ages. This book had me hooked right after reading chapter one. It keeps you wondering and that edge of your seat thrill happens all throughout the book. Along with that you will fall in love with some of the characters, but will be disgusted by more characters then you love. At least that's how it was for me. It will put a large amount of things into perspective for people, i know it did for me. Some things such as what teenagers in our time go through, it is a lot different then it has been in the past and no that is isn't a good thing in my opinion. It kind of makes you realize how ignorant people can be without seeing they are. In my opinion it was an all around amazing book and I would recommend it to many people! So go read it, you won't regret it.(:

Lots of underage drinking.
A girl is raped, a teen is killed in a car crash, a girl commits suicide, there's a fight among a couple of teens, some property is vandalized.
