Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes his latest tour de force thriller -- an unforgettable plunge into a world of sex, violence, marital betrayal, medical malpractice, and Southern intrigue . . .

Greg Iles' new big-trouble-in-a-small-town thriller takes place in the span of a terrifying single day. Elizabeth Pike, thirty-five, awakens in her perfect house in a perfect neighborhood in a beautiful little town to find her doctor husband wildly pulling books from the shelves in his study. He claims that his frantic search is the result of an IRS audit of his practice. Liz is not so sure . . .

Publishers Weekly

David Colacci's narration rises above Iles's potboiler material to deliver an entertaining, and at times exciting, story. When Warren Shields finds an unsigned love letter to his wife of 12 years, she refuses to identify the writer. Crazed with jealousy and armed with a gun, Warren, who is harboring a secret of his own, takes his wife and their two children hostage until she reveals her lover's name. Things escalate when the police lay siege to their home. Iles deals out one unbelievable plot element after another, but no matter how coincidental or farfetched the situation, Colacci keeps the story moving and breathes truth into the most improbable proceedings. Even though the characters continually make decisions and react in ways that defy logic, he brings a reality to them through the solid commitment of his performance. Simultaneous release with the Scribner hardcover (Reviews, Oct. 15). (Nov.)

Biography

Greg Iles gained notice for his smart, what-if storylines based on World War II scenarios; but when he turned to his own territory to write suspenseful, modern crime stories set in the American South, that's when readers really sat up and took notice.

September 06, 2008: More soft core porn than thriller, I couldn't find one character to care about. A real disappointment after reading Blood Memory.

March 17, 2008: Couldn't find a character to like or identify with. Circumstances and situations were squirm inducing. Just not up to Iles usual high standards. Skip this and read his others.
