Description:This is the latest edition of a softbound pocket-sized manual of critical care last released in 2001.
Purpose:A set of concise treatment algorithms for use at the bedside is provided.
Audience:Trainees or teachers needing an introductory tool are an appropriate audience for this work, which originates from a mixture of house officers and teaching faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Features:The book begins with cardiopulmonary collapse, an overview of mechanical ventilatory support and strategies for shock. Subsequent chapters are organized by organ system. After three brief chapters devoted to surgical problems, the final group of 10 chapters describes common procedures, including arterial and venous catheterization, intubation, chest tube placement, and pulmonary artery catheter insertion. Concluding appendixes review drug interactions and dosages and summarize common equations. Chapters are succinct and make impressive use of tables and treatment diagrams. Occasional black-and-white line drawings are included, that like the treatment algorithms and tables, reproduce well and are effective communication aids. Detailed discussion of pathophysiology is not emphasized. Chapters conclude with a small number of references, frequently in an annotated bibliography. References typically reflect primary literature, but reviews rather than the most current papers are presented. The table of contents lists chapters and authorship. The concluding subject index of nearly 30 pages includes separate citations for tables.It truly is small enough to fit in a lab coat pocket.
Assessment:This is an excellent pocket manual for medical students or postgraduate trainees facing that ICU rotation. Surgical topics receive limited emphasis but appendixes provide excellent summary information. Although there are some editorial inconsistencies, they are relatively minor and don't detract from the strong commitment to efficient visual organization of information. The manual may be compared to the Critical Care Handbook of the Massachusetts General Hospital, 4th edition, edited by Bigatello, et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2006) .
