Synopsis

In The War of the Worlds (1898) H. G. Wells invented the myth of invasion from outer space. Martians land near London, conquering all before them, and ruin the metropolis; the fate of civilization and even of the human race remains in doubt until the very last.

The War of the Worlds is disturbingly realistic both because of its setting -- Wells bicycled the route the Martians take on landing -- and because of its characters: the superstitious curate, boastful artilleryman, and enterprising medical student are believable if not sympathetic figures, as well as signifying types of fin-de-siecle change and vision. The novel exemplifies most dramatically the scientific scepticism and vivid narrative imagination which make Wells the pre-eminent founder of modern science fiction.

Annotation

As life on Mars becomes impossible, Martians and their terrifying machines invade the earth.

Biography

"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe," H. G. Wells once said. Widely revered as the father of science fiction, the English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian penned ominous -- and educated -- glimpses at humanity's possible future, including The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898).

February 23, 2008: I found H.G. Wells' 'War of the Worlds' to be an outstanding piece of literature that resets my perspective of how we treat inferior organisms and how organisms far superior to us might see us from their point of view. In this book, the Martians planet has been cooling down and is on the point of being inhospitable, so they send warfare via giant cylinders to Earth which they view as their future home because of its much warmer climate. When the Martians arrive, they launch an extermination attempt against all humans in a battle for Earth. This story is viewed through the eyes of an average citizen of small town in England during the Opposition of 1894 and tells the epic story of the survival of he and his brother as the Martians try to extinguish human life as we know it on Earth. I would intently recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an epic adventure or a paradoxical science fiction.

January 24, 2008: The name of the book I?m reviewing is War of the Worlds. It was written by H. G. Wells. This book was published by the Dalmatian Press in 2005. It was published in Franklin, Tennessee, U.S.A. The books genre is science-fiction. It has 248 pages, 244 of which are the actual story. War of the Worlds is about Martians that land on Earth and begin to kill humans wreak havoc. The story is told in first person. War of the Worlds takes place in the late century 1800's in England. The story takes place in and around numerous cities and towns. Some of these cities include London, Ottershaw, and Woking. The book doesn?t say the name of the main character in the story, but he is an astronomer and look at the stars a lot. Other important characters in the story are Ogilvy. The plot in the story is that Martians come to Earth from Mars and bring with them weapons that far exceeded any weapon on Earth. I like War of the Worlds because it helps to show how life was like back when it was written. I also like the vocabulary that is used in the book. I enjoyed reading War of the Worlds. It is one of the science-fiction books that I find entertaining. I like the writing style that H. G. Wells used when he wrote the book. It gives me a feeling of what it was like to live back then. The ?voice? of the narrator makes him sound intelligent because of the large vocabulary that is being used to tell the story. When I read War of the Worlds, it reminds me that sometimes things happen that you can?t do anything about. In the story, the Martians had weapons that were superior to any weapon on Earth. If you are a person who likes to read science-fiction books, or any other type of book for that matter, I would recommend reading War of the Worlds.
