The world is a breathtakingly big place, and in this big book we have undertaken the big task of detailing as much of it as we canevery single country, many of the larger dependencies and other, smaller destinations. With the traveler's experience at its heart, this book shows a slice of life in every corner of the globe, and all points in between, engaging the reader's senses in an adventure which conjures up the sights, smells, tastes, sounds and feel of our amazing world.

"Lonely Planet's photographs are technically perfect...and with all those images, every reader will find something to admire."
A stunning and utterly captivating testament to the beauty and wonder of our natural and human world, this book covers a whopping 230 countries, including some not technically countries at all, like Greenland, Hong Kong, and various Caribbean islands. Casting a wide net, Lonely Planet's editors have nonetheless managed to distill something essential about each location, in 1200 dancing images of its people and places and brief but spot-on suggestions of what to eat, drink, listen to, and watch. Entries are arranged alphabetically rather than geographically, and this logic works: the oddness of seeing Jamaica followed by Japan and Jordan; or Afghanistan preceding Albania, Algeria, and Andorra is strange and startling and sure to delight. A dearth of historical facts or statistics-although capital, population, area, and official language information is included-make this not a reference work but rather, in the turning of the pages, a suggestive, provocative, loving portrait of our gorgeous, haunting planet, not lonely at all. Highly recommended.-Tania Barnes, Library Journal Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

A beautiful book but....
A reviewer, an avid traveler., 12/30/2004
I think this is a really beautiful book and have spent hours going from page to page and country to country. The only down side for me and for others who have paged through it, not in such detail, is that the pictures don't always tantalize you to visit the place. I know that Lonely Planet was trying to avoid the cliche of picture postcard photos but there are some magnificently beautiful countries where all that is offered here are full facial shots of some of the citizens who could be from anywhere. Many of the people pictures are great but I would prefer a few more scenic shots. I have purchased other travel books of the world that inspire me to visit more.
This Book Confirms...What A Wonderful World We Live In...

I purchased this book as an Xmas gift for a friend. After hours of paging through and reading it...I am going to keep this one for myself and order more as gifts for family and friends. It is a feast for the mind and soul. Such beautiful photos. It inspired me to extend my travel plans to include more than a Carribean beach! It helped put all of the stress in the world in perspective by reminding me that what really matters is that we live on a glorious planet inhabited by beautiful people and the many wonders of nature. I think every household should have this book as a learning tool to see the bigger picture...to help one understand that we all have a share in this miracle...regardless of race, religion, political views, sexual preferrence or income!
