      Synopsis

An unforgettable spiritual journey through the Himalayas— now celebrating its thirtieth anniversary

IN 1973, Peter Matthiessen and field biologist George Schaller traveled high into the remote mountains of Nepal to study the Himalayan blue sheep and possibly glimpse the rare and beautiful snow leopard. Matthiessen, a student of Z en Buddhism, was also on a spiritual quest—to find the Lama of Shey at the ancient shrine on Crystal Mountain. As the climb proceeds, Matthiessen charts his inner path as well as his outer one, with a deepening Buddhist understanding of reality, suffering, impermanence, and beauty.

      The Nation - Jim Harrison

A magical book, a kind of lunar paradigm and map of the sacred.

February 10, 2009: In short, my favorite book. Peter does a wonderful job combining travel and adventure with deep reflection and introspection of a region. He really connects the culture and philosophy. His writting is poetic and alluring even when he is being technical. I have read the book several times and have given it to many friends. If you like to travel and like philosophy or spirituality this is a must read. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Even as an intro to spirituality or someone who would enjoy a great adventure. Peter Mattiessen has managed to make this readable to a wide variety of interests.

November 29, 2008: This is one of my favorite books. It has a quiet beauty to it like the landscape it describes. It is that could easily be cross classified - nature, self-improvement, travel...probably others as well. The book was cathartic and religious without being overwhelming. It was exactly what was needed.

      I Also Recommend: The Alchemist.
