    Synopsis

Carmen got the jeans at a thrift shop. They didn’t look all that great: they were worn, dirty, and speckled with bleach. On the night before she and her friends part for the summer, Carmen decides to toss them. But Tibby says they’re great. She'd love to have them. Lena and Bridget also think they’re fabulous. Lena decides that they should all try them on. Whoever they fit best will get them. Nobody knows why, but the pants fit everyone perfectly. Even Carmen (who never thinks she looks good in anything) thinks she looks good in the pants. Over a few bags of cheese puffs, they decide to form a sisterhood and take the vow of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants . . . the next morning, they say good-bye. And then the journey of the pants — and the most memorable summer of their lives — begins.

    From the Hardcover edition.

    Publishers Weekly

First novelist Brashares successfully creates four distinct characters, each with her own story line, and ties them together with a creative device: a pair of pants purchased in a thrift shop. As four lifelong friends prepare to split up for the summer, they discover that the second-hand jeans look good on all of them, despite their different physiques. They promise to rotate the jeans among them and, upon their reunion at summer's end, record their favorite adventures on the pant legs. These magical pants serve as a substitute friend for each girl as she is tested that summer, from Carmen, who goes to visit her father only to find out he's engaged to a woman with two teenage kids, to Tibby, who befriends a precocious 12-year-old cancer victim. Even though they are separated for most of the summer, the friends communicate their love and understanding for one another (Tibby writes to Lena, "Don't torture yourself, Len. We love you too much," to console her friend for mistakenly accusing a cute neighbor boy of spying on her while she skinny dips in Greece). Their bonds, combined with a realistic portrayal of teen emotions (Tibby is embarrassed by the smock she has to wear to work at Wallman's, while Carmen boils with rage when the seamstress fitting her bridesmaid dress disparages her curvy figure), make for an outstanding and vivid book that will stay with readers for a long time. Readers will hope that Brashares chronicles the sisterhood for volumes to come. Ages 12-up. (Sept). Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

November 20, 2009: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, written by Ann Brashares is a realistic fiction book.

I thought the book was very meaning, when you're writing about friends you can never go wrong. About testing friendship and trying to stay together even when you're apart. I loved it!

The book takes place in many places, Bethesda, Maryland, Greece, Mexico, and North Carolina because all four of the girls, Bridget, Tibby, Lena and Carmen go to different places during summer.

Four best friends since birth who only spend time together during the summer because they go to different schools decide that this summer they're all going to different places. Lena and her sister go to Greece to visit family; Carmen goes to North Carolina to see her father, Bridget goes to a very hard core soccer camp in Mexico while the fourth friend Tibby is left behind to work and make a movie. Before they leave Carmen finds a pair of old pants in a thrift store, the girls all like them so they try the pants on and magically the fit all three girls even Carmen who thinks she big. They decide to send the pants along with letters to stay in touch with each other. They tell about how the summer is going, thoughts feelings and how they miss each other.

Lena while in Greece is out on the docks when she falls into the way and nearly dies only to be saved by a handsome stranger. She falls for him only to find that her and his families do not get along they're rivals. Bridget finds a guy she like but can't go for him because he's a coach. Tibby meets Bailey and they become friends but Bailey has a medical issues. Carmen finds out her father is engaged to the "perfect" woman.

The author, Ann Brashares has a young fresh style that make you feel like a teen is writing. They all sound like their own person.

If you like friendship and books that make you laugh and cry this is a great book for you!

November 20, 2009: The sisterhood of the traveling Pants by Ann Brashares is a great realistic fiction novel. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was a great book. It was great because I could relate to the book. In the book there were four best friends and I also have four best friends too. It takes place at different places in present time. Lena is in Greece, Bridget was at a soccer camp at Gaji, Carmen is with her dad and Tibby is at home. In this book, there are these four friends who are separated for the first time. They find these pair of pants that fit them all, even though they all have different bodies. Since they will be separated, the pants will go were ever the girls are. When they each have the pants, something happens. When Lena had them, she met a guy, which this is the first time she loved a guy. When Tibby had them she had a real friend. When Carmen had them she got mad at her dad because she thought that he didn't care, about only about his new family. When Bridget had them she also met a gut she liked. Although he was off limits, she still liked him anyway. Ann Brashares wrote this she used language that teenagers do, so they could relate to. She also goes from one girl's story to another girls story, when she does that you can't put the book down. If you like realistic fiction and a little bit of fantasy, this is the book for you. It talks about four girls that all fit into a pair of pants, when each of them have the pants they do things they would never did before.

I Also Recommend: Forever in Blue, The Second Summer of the Sisterhood.
