From the national bestselling author— the new novel set in the "darkly fascinating world"(SF Site) of the Black Jewels. Dena Nehele is a land decimated by its past. Once it was ruled by corrupt Queens who were wiped out when the land was cleansed of tainted Blood. Now, only one hundred Warlord Princes stand—without a leader and without hope. Theran Grayhaven is the last of his line, desperate to find the key that reveals a treasure great enough to restore Dena Nehele. But first he needs to find a Queen who remembers the Blood's code of honor and lives by the Old Ways. The woman chosen to rule Dena Nehele, Lady Cassidy, is not beautiful and believes she is not strong. But she may be the only one able to convince bitter men to serve once again.
Bishop's capable seventh Black Jewels fantasy soap opera installment (after 2008's Tangled Webs) surges with spellcraft and engaging romance. The former queen of Bhak is now just plain Lady Cassidy from Dharo, since her entire court resigned to go serve prettier, better-connected Lady Kermilla. Warlord Prince Theran Grayhaven seeks a partner to help him restore his family's land after a violent uprising. With the help of the High Prince of Hell, he finds Cassidy, whose friends encourage her to accept his proposal and return to being a queen. All seems well until the pair run into compatibility problems, and Cassidy meets a mysterious gardener who calls to her heart. Bishop's epic has a complex history and will best be appreciated by readers familiar with earlier books. (Mar.)

July 24, 2009: This book is not a bad read but it is not worthy of its Black Jewels legacy. There was too much of the characters from the Dark Jewels Trilogy and not enough substance in the characters who actually belonged to this book. I really wished for more gumption in Cassidy's character. I didn't like the messing ending for Cassidy and Jared's romance. For all of the involvement of Janelle and everyone from the Dark Court a black widow should have been able to treat or heal Jared's mental injuries from the torture endured at the hands of the destroyed queens. It was a readable book despite the messy plot and poorly developed characters.

July 10, 2009: I can read Anne's books over and over because the characters and plots are so captivating. The Shadow Queen is an excellent addition to the Black Jewels Series. I've read The Shadow Queen about 7 times so far since it came out in March!
