      Synopsis

After a mysterious woman foils an assassination attempt on the Queen's life, Alex Hepburn, a psychic agent for Her Majesty's Secret Service, recognizes the bold beauty as a conspirator he's been hunting for years.

      Kristin Ramsdell - Library Journal

When a plan aimed at catching a group determined to assassinate Queen Victoria is foiled by a young woman's gunshot, Secret Service Agent for the Crown Alex Hepburn uses his psychic skills to identify a young boy linked to the shooter. However, what Alex finds is not a boy but a woman—a woman with past connections to the traitors but who turns out to be a surprising ally when he needs one the most. The second installment in Thornton's "The Seers of Grampian" series about three men who inherit differing psychic abilities from their grandmother, the renowned witch of Drumore. VERDICT Murder, treachery, and intrigue are driving forces in this action-packed, cleverly plotted story that pairs a brilliant, calculating, relentless hero with a passionate, courageous heroine and lets the adventure begin. Thornton (The Runaway McBride) lives in Canada.

July 29, 2009: He gets strong sensations when he holds something the wearer has touched, and must intuit them, which is a challenge. An agent for Queen Victoria, Alex is on duty to thwart a plan to murder her when he is shot at by a mysterious blonde. Mahri Scot was actually aiming at a man behind Alex, and her shot dislodged the killer's gun. She is a disenchanted courier for a subversive group called Demos and had alerted the Secret Service to the attempt on the Queen. In the mayhem that ensues, Mahri, having discarded her wig, escapes with Alex hot on her heels. And he's hot on her heels (in more ways than one) throughout the book, charging up and down the Scottish countryside rescuing her, rescuing his wounded brother Gavin, foiling more plots, etc. Secondary characters, the charming Gavin who also has psychic powers; Gavin's amazing dog, MacDuff; and Dugald, Mahri's bodyguard, give the story some flavor. There's murder, intrigue, double-crossing, et al, but no real oomph in this one.

July 17, 2009: Alex Hepburn is an secret agent for Her Majasty's Secret Service. He also has a psychic power that was given to him by his grandmother at her death. His mission now is to protect the Queen at Bromoral Castle. While on duty he is shot at during a reception for the Queen, but the shooter missed and shot the man behind him. All he saw was a blonde woman. Alex and his brother Gavin chase after the woman, but soon find that the woman is on their side.

Mahri Scot was a courier for a faction that Alex and the Secret Service are after. Mahri and her companion Dougal lead Alex and Gavin on a chase through the Scottish countryside. Alex realizes that Mahri isn't the bad guy, the bad guys are after Mahri for betraying them and he has to protect her and get the bad guys.

I really enjoyed this sequel to The Runaway McBride. I only wished that Alex had used his powers more. Mahri was an very independent woman, which was unusual for the Victorian era.
