      Synopsis

      Dear Emmy,
I have decided to write it all down for you, even though I do have my doubts. I wonder if you really need to know exactly what happened to us–me, you, Callie–at the hands of our unpredictable, vicious mother. How we lived back then, when I was fifteen and you only seven, all of us full of fear. And then full of hope when we met Murdoch, the man who seemed to be showing us an easier future. What Murdoch did and what he couldn’t do. What you and I did. Part of me hopes that you’ll go along happily your whole life and never want to know the details.
But I need to make sense of it. I need to try to turn the experience into something valuable for you, and for myself–not just something to be pushed away and forgotten. Emmy, the events we lived through taught me to be sure of nothing about other people. They taught me to expect danger around every corner. They taught me to understand that there are people in this world who mean you harm.
      Matthew

      Children's Literature

Writing a letter to his younger sister Emma, Matthew tells the story of the abuse he and his sisters suffered at the hands of their mother, a selfish, narcissistic woman who ultimately alienates her children and the rest of her family. The abuse is portrayed realistically, with some physical abuse and a preponderance of emotional cruelty. Matthew is writing to Emma because she was so young when their mother finally left the family. Matthew is afraid that at some point Emma will believe that her mother Nikki has been wrongly accused of the abuse. The reader is able to see how Matthew and Callie worked hard to protect their younger sister from the brunt of the abuse. One of the most telling incidents is when Matthew recalls his and Callie's reactions to being told at school that they should report to an adult if they are being abused. Aged eight and eleven at the time, both children want to go to their teachers and tell of their nightmare lives. However, they know enough to recognize that the physical abuse is not as severe as it could be, and that Nikki is a good enough actor to convince others that she loves her children and would do anything to protect them. This is a powerful story told in the strong voice of a young man who has managed to rise above the life his mother created; his desire to protect his younger sisters is clearly a driving force in his life and the plot of this book.

October 30, 2009: This book is a very dramatic book and was written by Nancy Werlin. The main character in this book was Matt. I respect him because, he took care of his younger sisters. There mothers name was Nikki and she was very abusive and neglective. She always went out and left them in the apartment by them selves. There was no A/C so it was so hot the couldn't stand it. There mom always thought they were being disrespectful.

October 21, 2009: The book, The Rules of Survival by Nancy Werlin is one of my favorites for this year. One thing I like about it is that the author picked the mother to be the abusive parent. That made it interesting and different. The author gave very good descriptions of how the mother(Nikki) acted that made you really feel like you were there and were really scared of her! For example, she would hit her children to "teach them a lesson" and then act like nothing happened! When she got mad she would do dangerous things like sending her present boyfriend to damage her ex-boyfriend's (Murdoch's) car. I think there are real people out there who are like Nikki and it is great how the author put those realistic characteristics in the book. One of the funny things was how Murdoch discovered that Nikki was stalking him even though she had to stay a certain distance away from him. She would do all these crazy things to spy on him thinking that he had no idea she was there. Really, he knew all along and was making his own game out of the situation. The last thing I enjoyed in this book was how this story was actually a letter that Matthew was writing to his little sister Emmy. He would make little comments to her throughout the story so the reader would not forget. Overall, this book was great. I would recommend it to anyone who likes books that are funny yet serious and romantic but realistic. Like I said in my heading to this review, this is a wonderful book that is full of everything you need for enjoyable reading.
