    Synopsis

He had always wanted to be a warrior. The Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways, made him nervous. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now fifteen year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't realize yet is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied . . . .

Author Biography: John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, hoping to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency where he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John's assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting. After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years. John began writing Ranger's Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series. He currently lives in a suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

    November 23, 2009: 2. (4.5 out of 5 stars)

Looking at the front cover of the first Ranger's Apprentice book, I was skeptical. The cover sported a dark, hooded figure, and was called The Ruins of Gorlan, a title that promised odd characters and cheesy medieval plot-lines. I opened the first page and sighed a "here goes nothing" sigh, and awaited an uncanny misadventure. But, I was wrong.

Ranger's Apprentice is a story of a small, agile, fifteen-year-old orphan named Will who prays to be a warrior in the kingdom's army, but he is given the job of a ranger's apprentice instead. The specifics of the job are not well known to most people, and Will is therefore unenthusiastic and skeptical of the ranger who recruited him, Halt. To his surprise, the job of a ranger is a fast paced and exhilarating task, forcing him to spy, battle, and travel through towns unseen. But as a war begins to brew, Will's task as a mere apprentice grows more and more essential to the kingdom to which he has been loyal.

The book, to my surprise, was well-written, so much so that I was abducted into the pages within reading the only the first chapter. The plot-line was riveting. The characters were likeable. The journey was memorable. Also, there was message that size discrimination can be unjust and can lead to missed opportunities, something we should all keep in mind. The one thing I didn't like about it was simply that it was a fantasy book, which typically, is not my cup of tea. Surprisingly though, this fantasy actually managed to gain my approval.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in an excellent tale of action, justice, and perseverance. If you have read any of the Harry Potter books and enjoyed them, the series would be a good read, if not even better. I give the book 4.5 out of 5 stars.
