    Synopsis

Published thirty years after the Civil War, this "impressionistic" American classic tells a war story in a thoroughly modern way - without a trace of romanticizing. Through the eyes of ordinary soldier Henry Fleming, we follow his psychological turmoil, from the excitement of patriotism to the bloody realities of battle and his flight from it. In the end, he overcomes his fear and disillusionment, and fights with courage.

    Annotation

In the spring of 1863, as he faces battle for the first time at Chancellorsville, Virginia, a young Union soldier matures to manhood and finds peace of mind as he comes to grips with his conflicting emotions about war.

January 13, 2010: I like this book because it is about war and i love reading books about wars and the past. I would recommend it to a friend that likes war and the past. The author uses great summary of the setting and it gives you a great picture in your head of whats happening. The author also uses a good foreshadowing methood that makes you think hard of whats going to happen next. The characters dont have that much information on them to let you know about their past i like when i know about the characters past because it lets me know of what happened to make them the way they are in the book. The dialogue in the story is good and i like how the author used the same way they used to talk back then. The overall theme of this book was a young kid going to war for his country and getting rewarded for his troubles. The tone of author is that he made Henry sound very Brave and courageous. The syntax was that they were short sentences and some were angry sounding and some were sad sounding. This book is a very good classic. The main character is Henry Fleming and he is ready to go to war he is defiant towards his mother who doesnt want him to go to war. This book would be a very good rainy day book because the tone and the mood make you feel sad and hopeless. The story takes place during the Civil War. It was about a calvary of teenage boys. There was nothing bad about this book i would highly recommend it to a person who likes war books and old time talk.

December 09, 2009: This book is about a young man who decides to join the Union army during the Civil War expecting glory for himself, but finds himself conflicted about the war. He runs from the battle and throughout the day finds what the war is about. This book is great, I must say that I absolutely despise reading books fiction books. In fact I have only read a few books in my life that I actually liked reading. This book has just been added to that very short list. For the first few pages it may be hard to to understand but after getting used to the writing style it is easy to understand and very easy to follow. Even though the book was written over 100 years ago it is easy to connect what the author is saying to what is happening now in the world. There is also a deeper meaning to the book in the characters self doubt and self enlightenment, but I will let you find that out for yourself. I recommend this book to people who can read between the lines.
