The book has been variously described as the first to analyze the role of the political elite; as the one that established the independence of politics from theology; as an early formulation of the political 'myth' required to galvanize apolitical masses into revolutionary action; as a practical rule-book containing timeless precepts for the diplomat; and, most frequently, as the handbook of evil. Based upon Machiavelli's firsthand experience as an emissary of the Florentine Republic to the courts of Europe, The Prince analyzes the often-violent means by which political power is seized and retained, and the circumstances in which it is lost. Above all, it provides a remarkably uncompromising picture of the true nature of power, no matter in what era or by whom it is exercised.
Described as a practical rule-book for the diplomat and a handbook of evil, this work provides an uncompromising picture of the true nature of power.

The Prince is a definite must read. This masterpiece could be called today’s practical 'Ruling Guidelines for Dummies' book. If one desires to enter the field of politics, The Prince is a sure way towards political success. This book will take the reader through the constructive yet clever steps for ruling successfully, and also provide the reader with revelations about human tendencies, that will prove to be helpful in multiple aspects of life.
Pure brilliance

Machiavelli is a genius, his concise insightful musings on the predictability of human nature are absolutely enthralling. His language is beautifully simple and easy to understand and his logic is clear and is applicable for day to day life. Every concept he covers is complimented by examples from history. This book is enjoyable for both the intellectual and layman alike. Truly thought stimulating, this work is still fresh and vivid even after almost five hundred years. I highly recommend it.

More Customer ReviewsNeed to seize a country? Have enemies you must destroy? In this handbook for despots and tyrants, the Renaissance statesman Machiavelli sets forth how to accomplish this and more, while avoiding the awkwardness of becoming generally hated and despised.
"Men ought either to be well treated or crushed, because they can avenge themselves of lighter injuries, of more serious ones they cannot; therefore the injury that is to be done to a man ought to be of such a kind that one does not stand in fear of revenge."
For nearly 500 years, Machiavelli's observations on Realpolitik have shocked and appalled the timid and romantic, and for many his name was equivalent to the devil's own. Yet, The Prince was the first attempt to write of the world of politics as it is, rather than sanctimoniously of how it should be, and thus The Prince remains as honest and relevant today as when Machiavelli first put quill to parchment, and warned the junior statesman to know how to do wrong, and to make use of it or not according to necessity.

The book was faintly enjoyable to a point of being intellectually stimulating. The theories the author states about the ruling of a prince are sadly true throughout history. I do not believe that in current times in a democracy that we currently have in the U.S. that the realistic principles that he describes should be applied for success, although I do see how his chapter on inheriting wealth and a kingdom can be applied to some instance such as the scenario we are in with our current president. Taking this book with a Jeffersonian mentality I did not find this book to be applicable to how society should be run, but rather as a source of history of how societies have been unfortunately run by wanton rulers.
An honest writing

The Prince' is a notorious book due to denial of so called our ethics code .Our rulers and also a commom man don't care this code when they want success in thier livies .The writer of this historical document studied the livies of great rulers and analysed them , then he wrote this book, indeed it is a unique book in political literature Machievelli was very keen about progreess of his country, therefore he wrote this book with dare and did not care about any ethics code This is not first book about the principles of ruling.Chanakya had written a book before this book named ARTH SHASTER. I think the suggessions of this book for a ruler are correct for his ruling ,but i am not sure that it is a best book in favour public intrest
