    Synopsis

Standing on the fringes of life...

offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor.

This haunting novel about the dilemma of passivity vs. passion marks the stunning debut of a provocative new voice in contemporary fiction: The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

This is the story of what it's like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie's letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives. We may not know to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course through uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.

Through Charlie, Stephen Chbosky has created a deeply affecting coming-of-age story, a powerful novel that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller coaster days known as growing up.

    USA Today - Denise Kersten

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is part of an MTV Books series that targets teen-age readers. But it is more mature than most young adult literature and can be enjoyed by older readers as well.

November 05, 2009: How do you remember high school? Was it filled with happiness and joyful memories or was it a time in your life that you don't want to remember? Well, in the book "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" the author does an amazing job at bringing today's teenage world and putting it in a book full of twists and turns. We, as readers, are able to get a first hand look through the eyes of the main character as he enters his freshman year of high school because the book is all letters written from the main character to an anonymous person. The book takes place in the 1990's and starts off with a gloomy tone due to the information of the main character's loss of his best friend and isolation from his classmates. As the book progresses the mood changes. The main character meets people who help to experience life to the fullest. This book reveals the truth of the teenage life and exposes the negative sides to poor choices. The author involves run-ins with family issues, drugs, girls, and homosexuality which are in every high school. I would recommend this book to every parent and anyone who wishes to receive a different way to look at the world. Personally, I love this book. It is my favorite. The author is not afraid to show the realities of the world as well as show a new way of looking at things. Anyone can relate to this book in one way or another and that is why I believe everyone should read this book at least once in their life.

October 27, 2009: Are you looking for a book that is intimate? If so, you will enjoy The Perks of Being a Wallflower, written by Stephen Chbosky. Charlie, a sheltered high school kid, shares his life through various letters with an unknown receiver. His letters are completely honest and vulnerable.

At the start of the heartfelt story, you will feel some kind of sadness and pity for him. As Charlie learns to deal with the loss of a friend and entering High School at the same time, he finds himself lonelier than ever before. Incidentally, he decides to go to a football game, alone, and meets two people that eventually become very good friends.

With his new friends, Sam and Patrick, Charlie experiences more things than ever before. Between music, drugs, and sex, you can see Charlie transform into someone much greater and more aware of his surroundings. You will begin to see that he is capable of expressing his feelings and thoughts. For a minute you may even view him as "normal".

In the end, the friends who changed his life begin their own adventure as they head off to college. While Charlie tries to cope with this, a new realization comes into play that puts a twist to this book. It will leave you stunned and shocked.

Overall, this book was excellent and creatively written. Charlie, a character like no other, is so intriguing. His emotions are raw and will not leave you dissatisfied.
