    Synopsis

Hands-on strategies for teaching your disorganized child how to organize for school success!

The overstuffed backpack, the missing homework, the unused planner, the test he didn't know about. Sound familiar? When the disorganized child meets the departmentalized structure of middle school, everything can fall apart. Even the academically successful child will start to falter if she misses deadlines, loses textbooks, or can't get to class on time.

This practical book is full of hands-on strategies for helping parents identify and teach organizational skills. Educational consultant Donna Goldberg has developed these methods by working with hundreds of students and in this book she provides:

    • Assessments to gather information about your child's learning style, study habits, and school requirements

    • Guidelines for taming that overstuffed binder and keeping it under control

    • PACK — a four-step plan for purging and reassembling a backpack or locker

    • Instructions for organizing an at-home work space for the child who studies at a desk or the child who studies all over the house

    • Ways to help your child graduate from telling time to managing time

    • Special tips for kids with learning disabilities and kids who have two homes...and more

The Organized Student is a must for any parent who has heard the words, "I can't find my homework!"

    Library Journal

When educational consultant Goldberg polled parents about their children's school problems, most felt that a lack of organizational skills was the biggest. This compendium of strategies is tailored to remedy that situation, beginning in the fifth grade to ease the transition to middle school. Goldberg offers suggestions on how to organize a backpack or locker, time management, study habits, meeting school requirements, children's learning styles, and organizing a homework space. Special tips are provided for children with learning disabilities, and most references in the text are appropriate for this group. Parents seeking a broader data-based text should look to Michele A. Hernandez's Middle School Years: Achieving the Best Education for Your Child. This book would be most suitable for specialized collections on children with learning disabilities grades six- eight.-Walter J. May 23, 2009: I am using this book with an eighth grade transition group. It provides excellent suggestions for locker organization as well as binder and folder use. What I have found out from this group though, it that most middle school students don't use their lockers any more. They carry everything in thier bookbags! So another chapter is needed on how to organize the bookbag so that is functional as a locker as well. I totally recommend this book for counselors as well as parents and students.
