    Synopsis

Have you ever found yourself asking, “How did my life get so out of control?” Or wondering if this bigger life you have created is actually a better life?

Most of us have lives that are as cluttered with unwanted obligations as our attics are cluttered with things. The bigger-is-better idea that triggered the explosion of McMansions has spilled over to give us McLives–leaving us with chaotic, overcommitted schedules and no time to do what we want to do.

In The Not So Big Life, architect Sarah Susanka expands her revolutionary philosophy on inhabiting space to show us how to better inhabit our lives. Through simple exercises and inspiring stories, Susanka reveals that all we need to do is make small shifts in our day–subtle movements that open our minds as if we were opening windows to let in fresh air. The result: We quickly discover that we have all the space and time we need for the things in our lives that really matter. These small changes can yield great rewards. In her elegant, clear style, Susanka convinces us that less is truly more–much more.

Not So Big Life: Making Room for What Really Mattersby Anonymous

June 23, 2007: The Not So Big Life brings focus to the misunderstandings of time, activity, and success that we unknowingly/unwittingly bring to our lives - filling those lives with unnecessary anxiety, frustration, and lack of satisfaction. The resistance to doing Ms. Susanka's suggested exercises is exactly that which is standing in our way. Although they appear simple, and can be construed as yet something else 'to do', the exploration '....creates more than a to-do list --- it's a life list that can be reflected on, refined and redefined again and again.' (JF, Blogcentric Magazine). Through honest assessment and reflection, new understandings arose that have been life-changing - mindboggling. As she has done in her previous Not So Big House book series, Sarah Susanka teaches us a new language of perception - this time, of how we perceive our own lives.

June 13, 2007: My beloved American Lit teacher once said to me 'Don't use a big word when a little one will do.' I certainly wish someone had told Ms. Susanka the same thing. For someone who is fond of 'Not So Big' things, Ms. Susanka is fond of big words... and lots of them. Superflous comes to mind. I found this aggravating as she spends most of the book urging us to get back to the simple things of life, yet she never seems to simply get to the point. I will ? My God, she?s wordy. Although I agree with her existentialist point of view, her prattling on and on about it gets tiresome. I don?t think you need to explain it to the caliber of people reading her book. The exercises that occur in each chapter are repetitive and meaningless. If I knew what to write in these exercises, I wouldn?t need this book. I was extremely disappointed with this book, as I certainly agree with her philosophy of the Not So Big Life and have enjoyed her previous books.
